Working With Shifts
After you create shift plans, you can define and add shifts. Shifts define availability and work segment duration for Resources and Crews for use in Job assignment, automatic travel time calculation, and map route calculation. You can configure shifts for Resources and Crews, assign shifts to Resources in User Preference records, and select a default shift in System Settings records.
Shifts represent specific time periods within shift plans and can be one day or longer. Shifts have numbered days, such as Shift 1 and Shift 2, within shift plans. Each shift is composed of configurable shift segments that define time intervals for various activities, such as breaks or time off. To prevent scheduling Resources on holidays, you can create holiday calendars.
When dispatchers assign Jobs to Resources, the effective shift is determined by the Active and Start Date fields in Shift records. If you attempt to dispatch Resources and Crews that do not fall within active shifts and shift plans with start and end dates that are appropriate for the relevant Jobs, an error message appears.
Effective shifts are identified based on the following prioritized rules:
Resources
1. If Resources are assigned to Crews at the specified time or duration, target shifts are the effective shifts for relevant Crews. Otherwise, the next rule is applied.
2. If effective shifts are configured in Resource records, they are set as target shifts. Otherwise, the next rule is applied.
3. If effective shifts are configured for users related to Resources in their User Preferences, they are set as target shifts. Otherwise, the next rule is applied.
4. If effective shifts are configured in System Settings as default shifts, they are set as target shifts. Otherwise, the next rule is applied.
5. One natural day (24 hours, from 00:00 to 00:00 the next day) ) is set as the target shift, which means Resources are always available.
Crews
1. If effective shifts are configured in Crew records, they are set as target shifts. Otherwise, the next rule is applied.
2. If effective shifts are configured in System Settings as default shifts, they are set as target shifts. Otherwise, the next rule is applied.
3. One natural day (24 hours, from 00:00 to 00:00 the next day) is set as the target shift, which means Crews are always available.
*
When a Break work segment is embedded within an available work segment, the parent work segment is treated as continuous, without any interruption in availability.
When shifts configured for Resources are updated, travel times for associated Appointments and Events with start or end time values in the future are recalculated.
When shifts configured for Crews are updated, travel times for associated Crew Appointments with start or end times in the future are recalculated. Travel times for Appointments and Events are also recalculated for Resources assigned to the relevant Crew during the duration of the affected Crew Appointments.
When Resource and Crew shifts are modified, travel times for all associated Resource and Crew appointments and events with start or end times in the future are recalculated.
