Real-Time Data Validation Setting Behavior for Errors
Real-Time Data Validation controls when DVR errors are evaluated and how they appear in SFM Delivery for both header and child line fields.
Real-Time Data Validation determines when Data Validation Rules (DVRs) are evaluated and how validation errors appear in Service Flow Manager (SFM) Delivery. Enabling this setting provides immediate feedback during data entry, helping identify and resolve errors before saving.
Real-Time Data Validation is enabled in: SFM Designer > Layout Editor > Page Properties > General.
Validation Interface Elements
Validation errors are displayed using the following interface elements:
• Error icon: On the header, the Error icon displays next to the Save button with the total error count. Selecting the Error icon expands the error banner. On child lines, the Error icon appears on affected lines and on tabs that contain validation errors. Selecting the Error icon on a child line displays the error message and the list of participating fields.
• Error banner: Lists all validation errors with the following options:
◦ Show Fields / Hide Fields: Expands or collapses the list of fields associated with the validation rule.
◦ Highlight all errors: Highlights all affected fields and displays the Error icon on affected child lines and tabs.
Show Fields / Hide Fields and Highlight all errors are available in the header error banner only. For line-level errors, the Error icon on the child line displays the error message and participating fields without these options.
• Inline error messages: Displayed below a field when a validation rule fails.
If a field in a validation rule is not present in the page layout, the error message appears without a hyperlink.
Validation Behavior
The following table describes when Data Validation Rules (DVRs) are evaluated and how errors are presented across the header, detail (child line), and multi-field validation scenarios.

For validation rules that involve multiple fields, the list of participating fields in the error banner may collapse when the rule is re-evaluated. Selecting Show Fields expands the list again.

Header
• Errors appear in the error banner after Save or Quick Save. The banner expands automatically. Inline error messages are not shown initially.
• Selecting Highlight all errors displays inline error messages, highlights affected fields with a red background, and displays the Error icon on affected child lines and tabs.
• Selecting Show Fields displays the fields associated with the validation rule. Fields in the page layout appear as hyperlinks that navigate to the field. Fields not in the layout appear in grey.
Child Line
• Validation errors on child lines are evaluated together with the header on Save or Quick Save.
• Affected fields are highlighted in yellow.
• Selecting Highlight all errors in the header error banner displays the Error icon on affected child lines and tabs.
• Selecting the Error icon at the start of the line shows the error message and participating fields. Fields in the layout appear in bold. Fields not in the layout appear in grey.
• For DVRs with an advanced expression involving multiple fields, selecting the Error icon displays a single error message for the rule, followed by all participating fields.

Header
• Errors are triggered immediately when a field value is updated and the cursor leaves the field. The Error icon and inline error messages appear for affected fields.
• The error banner does not expand automatically. Selecting the Error icon displays the banner. Errors are also summarized in the error banner.
• The field that triggered the error is highlighted with a red border and an inline error message for applicable fields, such as mandatory fields.
• Selecting Show Fields displays the fields associated with the validation rule. Fields in the page layout appear as hyperlinks that navigate to the field. Fields not in the layout appear in grey.
Child Line
• Errors are triggered immediately when a field in the validation rule is updated. The Error icon appears in the header and on the affected child line.
• Selecting the Error icon on the child line displays the error message and participating fields. Fields in the layout appear in bold. Fields not in the layout appear in grey.
• For DVRs with an advanced expression involving multiple fields, a single error message is displayed for the rule. The error message displays the updated field along with all other fields that are part of the DVR.
• Only the updated field is highlighted with a red background. The other participating fields are listed but not highlighted. If another field in the same validation rule is updated, the error message remains the same.

• Warnings appear only after all DVR errors in the record are resolved.
• When multiple data validation rules are associated with a field, the inline validation message follows the order defined in the Data Validation section of the SFM Designer. The data validation rule listed at the bottom runs last, so it takes precedence and its message is shown.
