Operational exchange (UPDM - NAF aliases)
Creation
To create an Operational Exchange as a link that is not realized by any elements:
From an NOV-2 Operational Node Definition: click the Operational Exchange Link button, click the source Node or Security Domain, and then click the destination Node or Security Domain.
On the Select Conveyed Classifier dialog, create or select the element that is the Operational Exchange element's conveyed classifier.
To create an Operational Exchange that is realized by a Needline:
From an NOV-2 Operational Node Relationship Description: click the Operational Exchange button, and then click the Needline. The source and destination elements of the Needline must be either a Node Role or Problem Domain.
On the Select Conveyed Classifier dialog, create or select the Operational Exchange element's conveyed classifier. From the context menu, click the command for the destination element.
To create an Operational Exchange that is realized by an Operational Activity Edge (Control Flow) or Operational Activity Edge (Object Flow):
From an NOV-5 Operational Activity Model: click the Operational Exchange button, and then click the Operational Activity Edge (Control Flow) or Operational Activity Edge (Object Flow).
From the dialogs that appear, select the conveyed classifier, the source Node or Security Domain, and then click the destination Node or Security Domain.
Realizing Elements
An Operational Exchange can be realized by many Needline, Operational Activity Edge (Control Flow) and Operational Activity Edge (Object Flow) elements.
To define that an Operational Exchange is realized by an element:
Drag the Operational Exchange from a Modeler pane to the Needline, Operational Activity Edge (Control Flow) or Operational Activity Edge (Object Flow) on a diagram.
Drag the Operational Exchange element's conveyed classifier from a Modeler pane to the Needline, Operational Activity Edge (Control Flow) or Operational Activity Edge (Object Flow) on a diagram. On the Select Operational Exchange dialog, select the Operational Exchange.
Right-click the Needline, Operational Activity Edge (Control Flow) or Operational Activity Edge (Object Flow), point to Links, point to Realized, and then click Operational Exchange. From the dialog, select the Operational Exchange elements that realize the element you right-clicked.
If you right-click the Needline, Operational Activity Edge (Control Flow) or Operational Activity Edge (Object Flow) on a diagram, the Operational Exchange elements that you select are added to the diagram.
You can view which elements realize an Operational Exchange on the Items tab of its Property Pages. In the Show Associated list, select Realization. Do not define realized elements through the Items tab.
When an Operational Exchange is realized by an element, you can change the source and target elements of the Operational Exchange to those of the realized element: on a diagram that shows the Operational Exchange on the realized Needline, Operational Activity Edge (Control Flow) or Operational Activity Edge (Object Flow), right-click the Control, and then click Set Ends to Realizing Link Ends.
Appearance
When shown on an NOV-2 Operational Node Definition, an Operational Exchange Link appears as follows:
When shown on an NOV-2 Operational Node Relationship Description or NOV-5 Operational Activity Model, an Operational Exchange realization appears as follows:
An NOV-3 Operational Information Exchange Matrix is useful for viewing information about Operational Exchange relationships in a table.
Relationships
There are no relationships that are of significant importance to an Operational Exchange.
