Overview of creating and customizing Publisher styles (Publisher)
On the Generate pane you can select a Publisher Style to use for generating a Word document. The Publisher Style determines the layout of the generated document and the content of the title page, headers and footers.
You can create a new Publisher Style and customize it for your needs:
You can change the content and presentation of the title page.
You can change the content and presentation of headers and footers.
You can change the Word styles used in the generated document to change the presentation of information that is extracted from a model.
You can include additional Publisher document properties in generated documents.
You can create your own custom style parameters and formatting parameters and include their values in generated documents.
You can define default values for the Formatting Parameters associated with the Publisher Style.
After creating a Publisher Style, other users can use that style from their computers.
When you create a new Publisher Style, it can be used only for changing documents generated through the Word output format. You cannot customize the presentation of the Publisher HTML, Publisher XML and DocBook and output formats.
Creating Publisher styles
You create a new Publisher Style by copying and customizing an existing Publisher Style.
Initially you will copy and customize the provided 'PTC' Publisher Style. Thereafter you can copy and customize the 'PTC' Publisher Style or any Publisher Styles you have created.
You customize a Publisher Style by making changes to configuration files and Word templates. If a configuration file is changed incorrectly, the Publisher Style may be left in a state where it cannot be used.
Important: Do not customize the 'PTC' Publisher Style. Sometimes the customization of a Publisher Style can go wrong, so it is useful to be able to go back to a working Publisher Style.
For more information about creating a new Publisher Style, refer to Customizing a style template
Customizing a Publisher Style's title page
When Publisher generates a Word document, the title page is defined in a Word template that is referenced by the selected Publisher Style.
Each Publisher Style defines a title page through a Word template named titlepage.xml. After creating a new Publisher Style, you can customize its titlepage.xml Word template that defines the title page.
For more information about customizing a Publisher Style's title page, refer to Customizing the title page used in a generated document.
Customizing a Publisher Style's headers, footers and document styles
When Publisher generates a Word document, the headers, footers and Word styles are defined in a Word template that is referenced by the selected Publisher Style.
Each Publisher Style defines headers, footers and Word styles through a Word template named wordml.template.xml. After creating a new Publisher Style, you can customize its wordml.template.xml Word template that defines the headers, footers and Word styles.
For more information about customizing the headers, footers and Word styles used in the generated document, refer to Customizing the Word styles used in a generated document.
Including document properties in generated Word documents
When generating Word documents, Publisher extracts some Publisher document properties for the generated document, such as the Title, Publish Date and Classification document properties. You can extract other document properties by adding Word field codes to a Style's titlepage.xml and wordml.template.xml templates.
For more information about including document properties in generated Word documents, refer to Including document properties in generated Word document.
Including your own custom style and formatting parameter values in generated Word documents
You can create your own custom style parameters and formatting parameters that will appear in the Document Property dialog in Publisher. You can then change your Publisher Style's Word templates so that the values set for these custom style parameters and formatting parameters in Publisher appear in the generated document.
For more information about including your own custom style and formatting parameter values in generated Word documents, refer to Including your own custom styles and formatting parameters in a generated Word document.
Customizing a Publisher Style's default values for Formatting Parameters
When you select a Publisher Style in the Generate pane, the default value of each Formatting Parameter is set through the Publisher Style's docbookparams.xsl file. You can change the Publisher Style's docbookparams.xsl file so that different default values are set.
For more information about setting the default values for formatting parameters, refer to Customizing a Publisher Styles formatting parameter values.
Using Publisher Styles from a remote computer
After you have customized Publisher Styles on a computer or created new Publisher Styles on a computer, users of other computers can use those customized or new Publisher Styles remotely from their computers, rather than using the Publisher Styles that are defined on their computers.
For more information about using Publisher Styles from a remote computer, refer to Using Publisher Styles form a remote computer.
