Glossary of PTC License Management Terminology

Banking
The process of storing unconfigured software products.
Billing Address
The location where PTC will send billing information.
Configuration ID
A number assigned to a license or configuration of licenses. In the past this number was used by customers and PTC as a method of tracking licenses and checking maintenance entitlements.
Customer Detail Report
A report including in depth descriptions of products, configurations, CPUs, hardware information, site addresses, and contact information. These reports allow customers to review the current installation status of products, where they reside. Customer Detail Reports do not include license codes.
CPU Information
Information about your hardware (CPU ID, platform, OS, etc.)
Ethernet Address / HostID (CPU ID)
All PTC products use the server machine's Ethernet Address or HostID for licensing purposes. Click here to learn how to determine a machine's Ethernet Address.
FLEXlm
A commercially developed licensing software product.
Hardware Reconfiguration
The process of changing any aspect of the machines currently mapped to a Configuration ID.
Hardware Roles
The machines ability to access and distribute licenses of your PTC software. The following four options define the capabilities:
  • Independent: The license is locked to a single hardware unit that is capable of running this license of the software. The license can not be run on any other machine.
  • Client: This hardware role has no licenses directly assigned to it but rather accesses licenses from another server machine to run the software. The hardware role is used to ensure the appropriate media is shipped to a customer's location.
  • Server: A license Server administers a set of floating licenses to any other machine on its network.
  • Fault Tolerant: A Fault tolerant configuration utilizes a set of three server machines to distribute a set of floating licenses to any hardware unit on its network (also known as a Triad Configuration).
Install Base
The software products owned by a customer and how they are configured.
Install Number
A number used by PTC’s order management system prior to October 20, 1997 used to identify a single installation of your software.
Install Site Number
The Site Number assigned to define the physical location of the hardware. This unique number used by PTC to define the Installation Address.
Installation Address
The physical location of your PTC license server or the machine running PTC locked licenses.
License File Number
Pertains to Computer Vision products only. Only applies to previously installed products. Will appear as a "Q" or "U" followed by either four to five digits.
License Management
PTC organization responsible for all license administration activities.
License Management Software
The application used to secure and administer the used of PTC software products (PTCLM, FLEXlm).
License Pack
Document containing the license codes necessary to run your software.
Maintenance Entity
A grouping of Configuration IDs indicating the group of products a customer wishes to have quoted together.
Maintenance Release Shipment
An update to the next major release of PTC software.
Maintenance Shipping Address
The address to which PTC will ship eligible software and documentation for maintenance releases (updates to the next major release of software).
Order Management
PTC organization responsible for order processing.
Product Status
The Product Status determines whether a product is currently installed or Not Installed on a cpu id.
  • Not Installed: Product is not currently installed on a Cpu id.
  • Installed: Product is currently installed on a Cpu id.
  • Terminated: License has terminated and is no longer available for use.
  • Upgraded: Product has been upgraded to a new product (for example, PT/Modler to Pro/Engineer Foundations).
  • VPA Banked: Product has been banked as part of a Volume Purchase Contract. Reinstatement of these products can be achieved through negotiation through PTC sales upon expiration of that contract.
PTCLM
PTC’s proprietary software (Pro/SERVER) and serial-number based licensing scheme used to manage all PTC products prior to the introduction of FLEXlm.
Reconfigurations
The process of modifying the configuration of software (moving modules from one license to another).
Sales Order Number
A unique number that identifies a single software order. View examples of where the Sales Order Number can be found on a Packing Slip or a Shipping Confirmation Letter.
Serial Number
A sequence of eight alphanumeric numbers used to license, identify and track your software with PTCLM (10-11-A3-E7)
Service Contract Number (SCN)
A Maintenance Agreement between Vendor and Customer, which entitles the customer to receive technical support and other maintenance benefits throughout the duration of the agreement, providing the contract remains active.
Ship to Site Number
The Site Number defined or selected to ship new product to a customer. View examples of where the Ship to Site Number can be found on a Packing Slip or a Shipping Confirmation Letter.
Site License Pack Report
A text file containing all license codes necessary to run the PTC software installed at a given site.
Site Number
A number used to identify your company’s location. A single company can have multiple sites. Your Site Number will represent your physical address. Site Numbers can be located on your License Pack or Packing Slip next to the address in parenthesis.
Shipment Confirmation Letter
A notification sent to customers when PTC has shipped their software order.
Software Correction Address
The address where PTC will send update CDs for software corrections.
Software Reconfiguration
The process of changing the configuration of licenses and machines.
