Creating a File By Using an Existing File as a Template
You can create a file by using an existing file as a template. In the Enterprise Edition, your ability to create files depends on your permissions. All permissions are set by your system administrator.
1. Do one of the following to open the Create File window:
On the standard toolbar, click New.
Select File > New and the appropriate submenu commands.
2. Complete this window, being sure to select Run Create File Wizard. For more information, see Create File Window.
3. Once Run Create File Wizard is selected, click OK.
If the file to create is a singular support file, a window opens, indicating that the existing version of the file is backed up if you continue. Click Yes if you want to continue.
The Create File Wizard starts and displays the Original File Source page. The options on this page depend on the type of file to create.
4. Select an option, referring to the following table for descriptions of all possibilities.
Option
Description
My current Project
OR
My Projects
The option that appears depends on whether the file to create is a singular support file.
When it is not a singular support file, My current Project is shown. Selecting this option (default) indicates that the currently selected Project contains the file to copy.
When it is a singular support file, My Projects is shown. Selecting this option results in the display of the Project Location page so that you can select from any of your Projects.
Another Project
This option appears when My current Project is shown. Selecting it results in the display of the Project Location page so that you can select from another of your Projects.
Sample Project
This option always appears. Selecting it results in the display of the Select Project page so that you can select any Team Project stored in the Samples folder on the application server. Several sample Team Projects are supplied. To use the Team Projects that you have created as templates, you would place them in this folder. For more information, see Sample Projects and Templates.
Supplied Files Project
OR
Supplied file
One of these options appears only if you are creating a file for which supplied versions are available in the Supplied folder on the application server. For more information, see Supplied Files.
If the file to create is a library type for which supplied versions are available, Supplied Files Project is shown. For example, this option is shown when the file to create is a Report Design file.
If the file to create is a singular support type for which a supplied version is available, Supplied file is shown. For example, this option is shown if the file to create is a Project Filter file. This is because the Supplied folder stores a Project Filter file, Legacy Windchill Risk and Reliability Filters, which contains many more filters than the default Project Filter file.
Selecting one of these options results in the display of the Select Template File page, which lists all Team files of the selected type from those stored in the Supplied folder.
Create from Windchill PDMLink/MPMLink product
This option requires a Windchill connection and the Windchill integration license for BOM-based quality analysis and validation. When both these conditions exist, you can create a System file in an Enterprise Project from a Windchill product. When you select this option, the Create File Wizard continues in the same manner as when a Project is created from a Windchill product with the following differences:
The Select the Field Mapping page displays all mappings defined at the Project level.
The Set Up New Project page is not shown.
5. Click Next. The page that appears depends on the option selected.
If Create from Windchill PDMLink/MPMLink product is selected, the Select Windchill Product page appears. To complete this page, and subsequent pages, see Creating a Project or Additional System File from a Windchill Product.
If My current Project, Supplied Files Project, or Supplied file is selected, the Select Template File page appears. Because no Project location information is needed, go to step 8.
If any other option is selected, either the Project Location page or Select Project page appears. The Project Location page appears only in the Enterprise Edition so that you can indicate whether the Project is in your database or in a Team Project folder on your local file system. The Project Location page is then followed by the appropriate Select Project page. For descriptions of options on these two pages, see Project Location and Selection Options for Enterprise Edition.
6. If the Project Location page appears, select the location and click Next to display the appropriate Select Project page.
7. On the Select Project page, select the Project and click Next. The Select Template File page appears.
All files of the selected type appear so that you can select the file to use as the template. For example, if Form Design is the file type, all Form Design files in the Project are shown.
8. On the Select Template File page, select the file to use as the template and click Next. The Wizard Complete page appears.
9. Click Finish.
The file is copied, giving consideration to the following conditions:
If the file to copy is large, the Copying File window opens while it is copied.
If the file to copy is a System file, the Opening System window opens while it is configured. This file then opens.
If the file to copy is a Report Binder file, all of its Report Design files are included in the new file.
