The following list is intended as a high-level summary of how to use the Type and Attribute Management utility. It provides a high-level list of what to consider and the order in which each section should be completed for best results. The links within each step navigate you to the appropriate section for more information.

Typically, the measurement systems and quantities of measure provided out-of-the-box in the Type and Attribute Management utility will be sufficient for your business needs. These steps are provided here for your consideration in the rare situation that you must define new measurements.

1. Read through the topic, Managing Measurement Systems to determine if you must create a new measurement system.

If applicable, override the default display units for any standard or newly created measurement system.

2. Read through the topic, Managing Quantities of Measure to determine if you must create a new quantity of measure.

If applicable, override the default display units for any standard or newly created quantity of measure.

3. Create new reusable attributes or edit existing reusable attributes using the Managing Reusable Attributes window.

If applicable, override the display units for the attributes. The units of measure entered in the Override column are used to display the attributes assigned to the type. The override units must be compatible with the units of the associated quantity of measure.

4. Create new subtypes using the Manage Types window.

5. Add attributes to the types and subtypes on the Manage Types window.

6. Add or edit attribute layouts for the types and subtypes on the Manage Types window.

7. Set constraints, default values, and visibility for the attributes on the Manage Types window.

If an enumerated value list is to be reused by multiple attributes, consider creating a global enumeration to use in an attribute constraint, using the Manage Global Enumerations window.

8. Create relationship constraints using the Manage Relationship Constraints window.
