Working in Types View
In Windchill RV&S, a type represents a category of items that share a specific development cycle or workflow. Individual types are required whenever an independent workflow is needed.
As part of creating a customized workflow, type permissions allow you to control more precisely which users can work with an item according to the type the item is associated with. Type permissions allow you to create a unique set of permissions for a specified type, allowing the membership of the group to change based on the value of the type identifier.
When you create a new type, visibility is allowed to the everyone group by default (that is, all users can see the new type). You can later restrict visibility as required.
When creating a type in Windchill RV&S, you can also designate users or groups as Windchill RV&S type administrators for that type. For more information on type administrators, see “Assigning Type Administrators”.
Example
In a software development environment, a request for a new software feature may follow one workflow, while work to fix a defect may follow a different workflow. In such a scenario, the administrator creates two distinct types: Feature Request and Defect.
Key Considerations
Individual types are required whenever an independent workflow is needed.
Type permissions allow you to create a unique set of permissions for a specified type.
The super administrator can designate users or groups as Windchill RV&S type administrators for a given type.
Requirements management and test management utilize specific document item types that control the behavior of documents and promote reuse and versioning. To learn about document types, including how to manage and create them, see “Setting Up Documents”.
Using the Windchill RV&S administration client, you can manage types from one convenient location. Managing types is carried out through the Types view.

To open the Types view from the Windchill RV&S administration client, expand the Workflows and Documents node, and select Types. The Types view displays.
By default, the data filter in the Types view displays all existing types. You can search for a specific type by typing in the text filter. For more information, see “Filtering Data”.
You can categorize items into various types, for example, problems, proposals, solutions, or requests for change.
Any changes you make in the Types view have an immediate effect on your Windchill RV&S database. From the Types view you can access other type-related functions including Constraints and Workflow. For more information on these functions, see “Managing Constraints” and “Workflow View”.
Available Menu Commands for Types
Through the Types view, you can:
edit the details for an existing type
view the details for an existing type
delete a type
create a new item type
copy a type
reposition, or change the order of presentation for a type
The workflow view is used to graphically view and create a workflow for an item type. The workflow view cannot be used to import users and groups, or to create projects, types, and fields. Only one workflow for one type can be opened in the workflow view.

To launch the workflow view, a user must have administrator permissions.
Access to workflow functionality occurs in the Workflow view, which is contained in the Edit Type dialog box.
