Making Edits During Multiple-Row Editing

An item shown in the Document view can potentially be updated from a different window in the Windchill RV&S client. When multiple-row editing is turned on, the Document view is not refreshed to show these changes.

When multiple-row editing is turned on, at any time, you can perform operations that do not change or affect the document. Such operations include:

• Viewing a historical document as of a specified label, branch, date, or edit

The following operation is never permitted during multiple-row editing:

The following operations are not permitted during multiple-row editing when unsaved changes exit. You can perform these operations only after all changes are saved.

• Customizing columns in the Outline pane of the Document view, although customizing columns in the Content pane is permitted

• Toggling the reference mode for content between Share and Reuse

• Baselining the document and removing a baseline from the document

• Creating traces within and across documents using Create Trace or drag and drop

Additionally, when you select View > Options to configure the Document view, some options are unavailable in the Options window when unsaved changes exist. These particular options require a refresh of the view, which is possible only if there are no unsaved changes. These operations include:

◦ Outline column format

Multiple-row editing supports the following operations that affect the document. Some of these operations are permitted only when no unsaved changes exist. Such operations are immediately saved to the server and cannot be undone. All allowed cross-document operations fall into this category.

◦ You can perform insert operations. However, you cannot select Content > Insert Content > From Document if unsaved changes exist.

◦ You can perform content delete operations.

◦ You can perform move operations. However, some exceptions do exist:

▪ When multiple non-contiguous content rows are selected, you cannot indent or outdent them. Similarly, when content rows at different levels are selected, such as 2, 2.1, and 3, you cannot move the rows up or down or indent or outdent them.

▪ You cannot move content across documents if unsaved changes exist in either document. When no unsaved changes exist, you cannot undo the move because this operation is immediately saved to the server.

▪ You cannot create traces or relationships using Create Trace or drag and drop across documents if unsaved changes exist in either document. When no unsaved changes exist, you cannot undo the creation of a trace or relationship because this operation is immediately saved to the server.

◦ You can always perform cut operations.

◦ You can always perform copy operations.

◦ You can perform paste operations. However, some exceptions do exist:

▪ You cannot paste content that is cut or copied from a source document into a target document if unsaved changes exist in either document. When no unsaved changes exist, pasting content across documents cannot be undone because the operation is immediately saved to the server.

▪ You cannot select Content > Paste Special to paste content within a document or across documents if unsaved changes exist.

◦ When pasting content within the same document as the source, you can undo the paste.

◦ You can press CTRL and then drag content to paste a copy of this content elsewhere in the same document. The copy acts on a single node if the node has no children or on the section if a parent node is selected. If necessary, you can undo this operation.

• Including or inserting the current document into another document

◦ You can include or insert the current document into another document. If the other document is being viewed, it does not update to show unsaved changes that exist in the current document.

◦ You can include or insert multiple subdocuments. You can even include multiple subdocuments of the same document within a document. However, only the first subdocument for this document ID shows as included. Subsequent inclusions show as if they are inserted. This means that the first instance is the only one that displays children.

◦ The cyclical relationship icon

displays on subsequent inclusions of the same document within a document. This behavior for multiple inclusions of the same document is merely visual. Any export or report of the content still expands the content.

During multiple-row editing, an operation that commits data directly to the server refreshes the Document view. The following list assumes that you are selecting actions from the menus. All of these actions are available only when no unsaved changes exist in the document.

You can select Lock or Unlock regardless of whether the document has unsaved changes. Lock information is updated accordingly. However, when no unsaved changes exist, selecting Lock or Unlock updates the entire view.

• From the Content menu, selecting any of the following refreshes the Document view:

◦ Insert > Document

◦ Insert > New Document

◦ Insert Content > From Document

◦ Include > Document

◦ Include > New Document

◦ Toggle Include/Insert

◦ Relationships > Create Trace

◦ Toggle Share/Reuse

◦ Clear All Suspect

While selecting Item > Edit Item in Word or Document > Edit in Word publishes the data directly on the server, these actions get executed in a separate Gateway application. Consequently, these actions do not cause a refresh of the Document view, even after successful execution.

As you make edits to content items during multiple-row editing, icons display in the header of all rows with unsaved changes. A different icon displays for each edit type:

—The edited field icon indicates that at least one field value for the item has been modified. You can restore all field values to the original server values if necessary. For more information, see Restoring All Field Edits on an Item During Multiple-Row Editing.

—The moved item icon indicates that the row has been moved. Because multiple-row editing always functions in Section operations mode, all children of a moved item are also moved and display moved item icons.

•

—The deleted item icon indicates that the row has been deleted. Because multiple-row editing always functions in Section operations mode, all children of a deleted item are also deleted and display deleted item icons.

Deleted items are shown only when the display of pending deletes is turned on. By default, pending deletes are hidden. You can restore deleted items if necessary. For more information, see Showing and Understanding Pending Deletes During Multiple-Row Editing.

You can perform multiple operations on any row. For example, you can make field edits on an item before moving or deleting it. The field edits made before moving or deleting an item are remembered. When multiple operations are performed on a row, icons display in the following priority order if enough room exists:

For information about conflicts, see Resolving Edit Conflicts After Resynchronizing. Other icons display for deltas, locks, mandatory fields, and unresolved or resolved items.

If enough room does not exist to display icons for all operations that have been performed, icon priority determines the icons that display.

• In the Content pane, the height of the row determines whether all or only some icons display.

◦ If the height of a row is large enough, the row header displays icons for all operations that have been performed.

◦ If the height of a row is not large enough, the row header display only the icons that fit based on priority order.

• In the Outline pane, the row height is never large enough to display more than one icon. Consequently, it displays only the icon with the highest priority.

• If the editable item preview is shown, the item header displays icons for all operations that have been performed.

A tooltip displays when you place the mouse cursor over an icon. If icons do not display for all operations that have been performed, the tooltip lists the additional operations that were performed.
