Cross-hatching is always applied to a closed area.

To cross hatch an area, you must first create a seed line. The cross-hatch lines are automatically drawn parallel to, and on both sides of, the seed line. Only cross-hatch lines within the designated area are displayed on the sheet. When you define cross-hatching, it is placed by default on the CROSSHATCHES layer.
