In Creo Elements/Direct Modeling you have the option to copy or share a part or assembly. If there is a drawing associated with the original part or assembly, you can transfer the 3D-2D associative link to the copy ( Attach drawing to Copy). This means that the drawing becomes attached to the copied part or assembly and is disconnected from the original. You can also transfer the 3D-2D association to the mirror copy of the original part or assembly ( Attach drawing to Mirror)
It is also possible to transfer a drawing from one component to any other component, without restriction ( Attach drawing to Variant). You may want to do this, for example, after you have made modeling changes on a copy of an earlier version of a part, whose original drawing contains substantial annotations that you want to leverage in the later version's drawing. The second part need not have a view set associated with it; that of the original part can be copied.
The essential change when transferring association is that the drawing's 2D views are matched to the 3D views of a different model. This is why the target component must already have a view set, or an existing view set must be copied to it.
When a drawing is attached to another part or assembly, its association with the original is lost! Save the drawing before attaching it to the target.
To attach a drawing,
1. Click Annotation and then, in the Setup group, click the arrow next to Attach.
2. Click one of the following:
◦ Attach drawing to Variant to transfer a drawing from one part or assembly to any other.
The Att Dwg To Variant dialog box opens.
◦ Attach drawing to Copy to transfer a drawing to a real copy of a part or assembly.
The Att Dwg To Copy dialog box opens.
◦ Attach drawing to Mirror to transfer a drawing to the mirror copy of the original part or assembly.
The Attach to Mirror dialog box opens.
3. Click Continue in the Annotation Warning dialog box.
4. In the Original area, type or select the original part or assembly in the Model box.
5. In the Target area, type or select the part or assembly to which you want to transfer the drawing, in the Model box.
If a view set is absent in the target part or assembly, Creo Elements/Direct Annotation prompts you to copy the view set with the drawing when you use Attach drawing to Variant. Alternatively, you can manually copy view sets.
6. Optionally, type a new drawing number in the Drawing No box.
7. Click the Preserve View Center check box to maintain the center of the view.
8. Click to complete the operation.
The drawing now maintains association with the target component. Therefore, an update operation on the drawing derives view information from the target and not the original. To replace the association to the original component, repeat the above steps, but specify the original as the target part or assembly.
With the Attach drawing to Variant option, if the workplanes on which the parts were created had different orientations, the resulting drawing will have a different orientation from the original.
Conditions on transferring drawings
Transferring drawings with Attach drawing to Copy only works on real copies of parts or assemblies. With this option Creo Elements/Direct Annotation checks for all of the following conditions before transferring drawings:
• The drawing to be transferred must, of course, be loaded in Creo Elements/Direct Annotation!
• The original and target parts/assemblies cannot be the same.
• The original and target parts/assemblies must be of the same type (that is, part-part, assembly-assembly).
• The original and target parts/assemblies must both own view sets.
• The original and target parts/assemblies must own the same number of views and view sets.
• The original and target parts/assemblies must be at the same level in the part tree.
When the Attach drawing to Variant command is used, Creo Elements/Direct Annotation only checks for the first two conditions above. Caution: In this mode you can transfer a drawing to nearly any other component!
If you cannot attach a drawing because the parts/assemblies involved do not satisfy the above conditions, you may be able to attach individual views. See
Attach views.
