Assigning a Spares Pool to a Block
The Project’s RBD Spares file stores the spares pools to assign to blocks that are defined as repairable or replaceable components. When you use this support file, you can assign spares pools to the blocks representing these components. For more information, see RBD Spares Files.
1. In the RBD Table, select the diagram.
2. In the diagram, double-click the block to open its Calculation Properties window. For more information, see Block Calculation Properties.
3. On the Spares page, for Spares Pool, select the spares pool to assign to the block. All spares pools inserted in the RBD Spares file are listed.
Under RBD in the Options window, Spares display order controls how spares pools are listed. By default, they are listed in alphabetical order based on assigned names. However, you can choose to display them in the order in which they were inserted.
Information about using the View Spares file link to open this support file appears in the tip that follows this procedure.
Once you have selected a spares pool, its key properties are shown in the Summary area. For more information, see Summary Display for a Spares Pool.
4. To assign a spares pool to another block, do the following:
a. Use the navigation control at the top of the Calculation Properties window to select the block.
For information about using this control, see Changing the Active Object in the Properties Window.
b. If a window opens for indicating whether you want to save changes to the current block, click Yes.
c. For the newly selected block, repeat step 3.
5. Repeat step 4 for each block for which to assign a spares pool.
6. When finished, click OK.
7. To calculate the optimal number of onsite and offsite spares and spares replenishment levels for the block, perform the procedure described in Calculating the Optimal Number of Spares for a Block.
The next time RBD calculations run as described in Calculating RBD Results, the spares pool information assigned to blocks is used when calculating the achieved availability for the system.

Clicking the View Spares file link opens the RBD Spares file, where you can either insert a spares pool or modify the properties assigned to an existing spares pool. When you click this link, the data in this block’s Calculation Properties window is validated and saved. This window then closes, and the RBD Spares file opens.
