RPN
RPN indicates the criticality associated with a failure mode. RPNs are automatically calculated as you complete the following fields for a failure mode in the FMEA Worksheet: Severity, Occurrence, and Detection. RPNs are also calculated for all failure modes when FMEA results are calculated.
The built-in equation for calculating RPN is:
The range of values for these three fields are based on the lists assigned to Severity, Occurrence, and Detection.
The Severity value indicates the severity of the effect of a particular failure mode. For more information, see Severity Lists.
The Occurrence value indicates how frequently that particular failure mode occurs. For more information, see Occurrence Lists.
The Detection value indicates how often that particular failure mode can be detected. For more information, see Detection Lists.
For RPN values to make sense, these three fields must be at a FMEA data level above or equal to the data level of the RPN. For more information about how the FMEA data structure impacts RPN calculations, see RPN Calculation Examples.
