Creating a Report Design File that Displays a Graph from the Project Navigator
When graph settings are saved to a Graph Template file, you can create a Report Design file that displays the graph from the file selection or file open state of the Project Navigator. You can then insert this file in a Report Binder file if you want to add the graph to a collection of reports. For more information, see Reporting and Graphing.
In the file selection or file open state, the Project Navigator provides two methods you can use to create a Report Design file that displays a graph. The first method is much easier because most of the setup is automated. The second method requires setting up the file manually.
Method 1
When you use this method to create a Report Design file that displays a graph, most of the set up is automated.
1. In the Project Navigator, expand Graphs headings as necessary to locate the Graph Template file from which to create the Report Design file.
2. Right-click this Graph Template file and select Create Corresponding Report Design. The Select Report Orientation window opens.
3. Select Portrait (default) or Landscape and click OK. A window opens, indicating the name of the created file.
The default is the same name as the Graph Template file. However, if a Report Design file with this name already exists, a Copy of prefix is added to the file name.
4. Click OK.
5. If desired, insert this Report Design file in Report Binder files. For more information, see Using Report Binder Files to Generate Multiple Reports.
Method 2
When you use this method to create a Report Design file that displays a graph, you set up the file manually.
1. In the Project Navigator, right-click Reports and select Create File. The Create File window opens. The default for the type of file to create is a Report Design file.
2. For Name, enter the name to assign the file and click OK. The Create Report - Select Report Type window opens.
3. Select Graph Template as the report type and click OK. The newly created file opens in the Report Designer.
4. Select Insert > Data Field. The Data Fields Toolbar opens. For more information, see Data Fields Toolbar.
In this case, the Data Fields Toolbar lists only Graph because this is the only field that you can insert in a Report Design file for a Graph Template file.
5. Use the standard Windows drag-and-drop technique to drag this field from the Data Fields toolbar and drop it into the Details section in the Report Design file. For more information, see Report Sections.
6. Once Graph is inserted, resize it so that it spans the entire width of the file. For more information, see Sizing a Report Object.
7. In the Details section, right-click Graph and select Properties. The auto-hide Properties window opens.
8. Under Format, locate Graph Template and click in the Value column to the right. A < Select file...> label appears to indicate that a file must be selected.
9. Click the browse button to the right of this label. A selection window opens, listing all available Graph Template files.
10. Click the desired Graph Template file. The selection window closes. Under Format in the Properties window, this file is now shown in the Value column for Graph Template.
11. Save and close the Report Design file.
12. If desired, insert this Report Design file in Report Binder files. For more information, see Using Report Binder Files to Generate Multiple Reports.
