Assembly Versus Part
An assembly is a component or item in the hardware design, software application, or process. Assemblies and child assemblies, which are also called subassemblies, appear in white rows in the System Tree Items table by default. They are represented by the icon shown below. For more information, see Assembly How-Tos.

A part is the lowest-level item in the system, indicating that no further breakdown is possible. Parts appear in light blue rows in the System Tree Items table by default. They are represented by the icon shown below.

You can create an Enterprise Project from a Windchill product. In this case, the icons for the selected end item and its linked parts are imported from Windchill MPMLink or Windchill PDMLink. To emphasize this, Windchill icons are used to distinguish them from Windchill Risk and Reliability assemblies and parts. For more information, see Windchill Parts.
For Windchill Risk and Reliability assemblies and parts, you can change an assembly to a part or a part to an assembly. For more information, see:

In the Options window, Display > Assembly row color specifies the row color for assembly records, and Display > Part row color specifies the row color for part records. For more information, see Display User Options.
