Database Creation
The Windchill Risk and Reliability database stores your Project data. It also stores the user and group permissions defined in the Administrator application. When I want to create the Windchill Risk and Reliability database now is selected on the final page of the Setup program, the New Database Wizard starts after the installation finishes.
The creation of the Windchill Risk and Reliability database requires the presence of your DBA (database administrator) because a DBA user name and password must be entered. The DBA for a SQL Server or Oracle database is specified within the security information saved on the server for that database.
To complete the New Database Wizard, a SQL Server or Oracle database must already be installed, configured correctly, and accessible.
*
For a new installation, it is not necessary to install any Oracle client software. When prompted for the Oracle Net Service Name, you can use the quick connect format to connect to your Oracle server. A quick connect string looks like a SQL connect URL string: //host:port/service_name. The quick connect format is not supported for an upgrade of an existing installation. For an installation upgrade, you use the Oracle client software and your Oracle Net Service Name. For more information, see Oracle Database Conversion.
For more detailed information, see the following PTC Knowledge Base articles:
During the creation of the Windchill Risk and Reliability database, the DBA must supply database information. For a SQL Server database, the database server name is supplied. For an Oracle database, the quick connect string or Oracle Net Service Name is supplied.
When the New Database Wizard starts, it displays the Create Database page, which provides two options.
Create a new database
—Creates a new database for this installation. This task is generally performed when Windchill Risk and Reliability is installed. From the Databases area in the Administrator application, you can create additional Windchill Risk and Reliability databases.
Restore an existing database—Copies an existing database from one place to another. For users familiar with earlier Windchill Risk and Reliability or Relex installations, restoring a database means putting the RelEnt.rlx file from a previous instance back into place. This is generally done when the Enterprise Edition is uninstalled and then reinstalled on either the same computer or a different computer.
The help system and guide for Windchill Risk and Reliability Administrator describe how to restore a database. This section describes how to create the initial database for a new installation. As part of this process, any existing Windchill Risk and Reliability SQL Server databases are deleted. If an existing Windchill Risk and Reliability Oracle database is found, an error message appears, indicating that a new database cannot be created until the existing database is deleted
1. If the Setup program starts the New Database Wizard as part of the installation, go to step 2. Otherwise, do the following to manually start the New Database Wizard:
a. On the application server, double-click the WindchillRiskandReliability.Database.Enterprise file.
If the default installation directory was used, the path is Installation Directory\WindchillRiskandReliability12.0\RiskandReliability.
b. If a window opens for permitting this program to run, select Continue. The New Database Wizard starts and displays the Create Database page.
2. On the Create Database page, select Create a new database and click Next. The Database Server Name and Type page appears.
3. Complete this page, referring to the following option descriptions.
Server name—The name to assign to the server. The format of the name depends on the database type, which you also select on this page.
When the database type is Oracle, the server name must be a valid quick connect string or the Oracle Net Service Name. The format for the quick connect string is //host:port/service_name. For more information, see Windchill Risk and Reliability Enterprise Oracle Database Creation in the PTC Knowledge Base.
When the database type is SQL Server, the server name must be the name assigned to the server followed by the name of the Windchill Risk and Reliability database. The format is computer name\database name. The SQL database is created using the default properties for the SQL Server database server. If desired, the DBA can change these properties in SQL Server Enterprise Manager. For more information, see Windchill Risk and Reliability Enterprise SQL Server Database Creation in the PTC Knowledge Base.
Database type—The type of database. Choices are Oracle and SQL Server.
The following Oracle releases are supported: 19c.
The following Microsoft SQL Server releases are supported: 2017 and 2019.
4. Click Next. The page that appears depends on the selected database type.
If SQL Server is selected, the Database Administrator Login Required page appears. Go to step 5.
If Oracle is selected, the Specify Oracle Tablespace page appears. Although the defaults on this page are functional, your DBA might want to make some changes. After supplying the values to use, click Next. The Database Administrator Login Required page appears.
5. On the Database Administrator Login Required page, supply DBA account information, referring to the following option descriptions.
User name—The DBA user account used to log in to the database server. This user account must have sufficient privileges to create databases, tablespaces, and user accounts (logins).
Password—The password for the DBA user account.
6. Click Next. A window opens while account information is verified. If it is valid, the Windchill Risk and Reliability Login page appears.
7. Supply Windchill Risk and Reliability account information, referring to the following option descriptions.
User name—The Windchill Risk and Reliability user account that is to allow Windchill Risk and Reliability components to access the data in the Windchill Risk and Reliability database. This login is required because all access to the Windchill Risk and Reliability database occurs through this account.
*
You must assign a unique user name. Although the New Database Wizard does not verify that the entered user name is unique, database creation might fail if an existing user name is specified.
Password—The password for the Windchill Risk and Reliability user account. Passwords are case-sensitive.
Verify—The password entered once again in the same way as in the previous option. If the two passwords do not match, the password will not be set.
8. A default Administrator login will be created in the database for use by Windchill Risk and Reliability. In the Password field, specify the password you want to use for this log-in.
9. Click Next. The Wizard Complete page appears.
10. Click Finish. The Creating Database window opens, displaying progress as the database is created.
You use the processing information in this window to verify that the Windchill Risk and Reliability database is created successfully. While the database is being created, other windows that display processing information also open and close.
11. After reviewing, saving, and/or printing the information shown in the Creating Database window, click Close.
Following the creation of the Windchill Risk and Reliability database, you should ensure that all Windchill Risk and Reliability services are started. You can then log in to the Administrator application and begin setting up your Windchill Risk and Reliability system. Once it is configured, you can install Windchill Risk and Reliability programs on client computers.
