Viewing the RBD Simulation Log
The RBD Simulation Log shows the various events that occurred when availability calculation results were obtained by simulation. Record simulation log for first iteration of availability measures controls whether an RBD Simulation Log of the first iteration is generated. In the Calculate window, this checkbox is shown on the Advanced page under Simulation. For more information, see RBD Calculation Properties.
When you select this checkbox and then run RBD calculations, the RBD Simulation Log is created if availability calculation results are obtained by simulation. In this case, you can select RBD > View Simulation Log to view it. If this command is unavailable, no simulation log has been created for the active diagram because availability results were calculated analytically rather than by simulation. To force simulation to be performed, on the Advanced page, you must also select Force Monte Carlo simulation.
1. Select RBD > View Simulation Log. The RBD Simulation Log opens in a new window.
2. View the simulation data, referring to the following table for option descriptions.
Option
Description
Event ID
The sequential identifier assigned to the event. The first event has an identifier of 1. Each subsequent event is assigned the next available numeric value. The red or green icons in front of the event identifiers indicate if the system is operational or failed after the occurrence of the event.
A green circle with a checkmark indicates that the system is operational.
A red circle with an X indicates that the system is failed.
In some cases, you may see an event identifier having the same number as the preceding identifier followed by a decimal point and a sequential identifier. Such events indicate related records for the same event.
Time
The time in the simulation at which the event described for Event occurred.
Phase
The identifier of the phase in which the event occurred. Unless the RBD Simulation Log is for a phase diagram, the phase identifier is always Phase 1.
Event
The type of event. The first event is Simulation Start, and the Last Event is Simulation End. For many event types, either a block identifier or task identifier appears in the description of the event type. Event types that can appear include:
< Identifier > Operating
< Identifier > Failure
< Identifier > Repair
< Identifier > In Standby
< Identifier > Spares Arrive
< Identifier > Repair Resources Arrive
Begin < Task Name >
End < Task Name >
Details
The status of the block following the event’s occurrence. The block identifier appears in the status. The status can be:
< Identifier > Operating
< Identifier > Failed.
System mean availability
The average availability of the system over time.
Component mean availability
The average availability of the block or component over time.
3. To step through the simulation, use this window’s tool buttons. For more information, see Animation Tool Buttons.
In the RBD Diagram pane, blocks in the diagram are highlighted based on colors specified in the Simulation Animations Options window. For more information, see Simulation Animation Options Window.
At the bottom of the window containing the RBD Simulation log are three buttons: Excel, Text, and Print. You can use these buttons to save table results to a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet or text file or to print them to a printer. The Excel and Print buttons are described in Excel and Print Buttons. When you click Text, the results shown in the RBD Simulation Log are saved to a TXT file that then opens in Notepad.
4. When finished, click the X in the upper right corner of the RBD Simulation Log window to close it. If the animation is running when you close this window, it is stopped.
