Inserting a FMEA
You insert a FMEA in the System file by inserting an item for it in the FMEA Table. To make insertion of a FMEA simple, the New FMEA Wizard starts. You can use the New FMEA Wizard to insert any number of process and functional FMEAs in the System file. Additionally, you can use the New FMEA Wizard to insert a component FMEA for each system tree configuration in the System file. When only one configuration exists, which is the generally the case, you can have only one component FMEA.
1. In the FMEA Table, do one of the following to start the New FMEA Wizard:
In the last row, click < Click here to insert a new record >.
Press Insert.
Right-click and select Insert FMEA or Insert FMEA Above.
Select Insert > FMEA or Insert > FMEA Above.
When you select a command for inserting a FMEA between two existing FMEAs, it is inserted above the record currently selected in the table. Otherwise, it is inserted at the end of the table.
Upon starting, the New FMEA Wizard displays the Select FMEA Type page.
2. Select the type and click Next.
If Process is selected, the Wizard Complete page appears. You need only to click Finish to insert the process FMEA.
If Functional or Component is selected, additional wizard pages appear. Component is unavailable if a component (piece-part) FMEA already exists for each system tree configuration.
When the Configurations table is turned on in the Table Settings pane in the Project Properties window, multiple configurations can exist. In this case, the Select a Configuration page is shown when inserting a functional or component FMEA that you can select the configuration to use from all those in the System file. For a functional FMEA, this page does not appear until after the basis for the FMEA is selected. For a component FMEA, this page appears next.

The page name and text depends on the singular name for the Configurations table. For more information, see Specifying Table Settings.
The following table describes the other wizard pages that are shown prior to the Wizard Complete page for functional and component FMEAs.
FMEA Type
Description
Functional
The Select FMEA Basis page asks whether you want to make a copy of an existing System Tree Items table to use as the starting point for your new functional FMEA.
If you select Yes (default), the FMEA Tree Items table is a copy of the active System Tree Items table. However, if multiple system tree configurations exist, when you click Next, the Select a Configuration page appears so that you can select the desired configuration.
If you select No, the FMEA Tree Items table is empty. You must insert the system assemblies and parts.
When the Wizard Complete page appears, you click Finish to insert the functional FMEA.
Component
If multiple system tree configurations exist, the Select a Configuration page appears prior to the Select Modes Action page so that you can select the desired configuration. When the Select Modes Action page appears, you indicate whether you want to search FMEA Modes Library files to insert modes for part matches into the new component FMEA.
If you select Yes (default), all enabled FMEA Modes Library files are searched, and modes for any part matches are copied in the component FMEA.
If you select No, FMEA Modes Library files are not searched.
When the Wizard Complete page appears, you click Finish to insert the component FMEA.
Once you click Finish on the Wizard Complete page, a new FMEA is inserted in the FMEA Table. The unique identifier assigned to it is based on the format specified by FMEA Table Identifier, which appears under Identifiers in the System file properties. For more information, see Identifiers System File Properties. To delete a FMEA from the System file, you delete the record for it from the FMEA Table. For more information, see Deleting a Table Row.
If the hierarchical structure to analyze must be manually defined, in the FMEA tree, you insert assemblies and parts in the same manner as you insert them in the system tree. Additionally, you can expand or collapse branches and move, cut, copy, paste, and delete items in the same way. For more information, see System Tree How-Tos.
For any item in the FMEA tree, you can insert FMEA data levels in the FMEA Worksheet table. The hierarchical structure for your data levels is specified in the FMEA Design file. The standard structure has item, mode, and cause data levels, where a mode can have multiple causes and a single effect. If you want to use a different structure, you can select it in the FMEA Design file. For more information, see FMEA Design Files.
In all six supported structures, an item is the parent level. When you insert an item, one occurrence of each child level is inserted. If you insert an additional child data level for an item, one additional occurrence of each of its child levels is also inserted. For example, if you are using the standard structure, when you insert an item, one mode and one cause are also inserted. If you insert an additional mode for that same item, an additional cause is inserted.
