Data Fields
In the Calculation Editor pane, you can do one of the following to open the Insert Field window, which you use to insert a data field in an equation:
Click Data Fields.
Right-click in the field where you enter the equation and select Insert Data Field.
You can use fields from calculation results tables as input fields in your custom calculations. For more information, see Equations Using ResultFields.
Once you select the table type and field, you click OK to insert the field in the equation. If you first want to modify the properties for the field that you have selected in the Insert Field window, you click Edit Field to start the Edit a Field Wizard. When the calculation is for the FMEA module and the FMEA Worksheet table type is selected, a button for adding a field is also present. Clicking Add Field provides for inserting additional fields in the FMEA Design file so that they use them in your Project. For more information, see Using the Add/Edit a Field Wizard.
In the calculation, any data field that you insert appears in blue. In this case, the field name consists of the three parts described in the following table.
Part
Description
Icon for field type
The icon for the field type appears prior to the field name (prompt). For descriptions of all field types, see Data Field Types.
Prompt for field
The name assigned to the field in the Project’s Data Definition file. If a custom prompt is assigned, it is shown For more information, see Data Definition Files.
Table in which field is found
The table in which the field resides appears in parentheses after the prompt.
All of the information in the field name acts as one character in the calculation. This means that you cannot place the cursor inside the field name. You can only place the cursor before or after the field name.
If you place the cursor before the field name and press the right arrow key, the cursor moves to the end of the field name.
If you place the cursor at the end of the field name and press the backspace key, the entire field is deleted.
Additionally, you can use the Data Fields Toolbar to insert data fields in equations instead. The Data Fields Toolbar displays only fields from valid tables, based on the selected module and the table type for the field in which results are stored. For example, if results are stored in a field in the FRACAS Incidents table, then fields in the FRACAS Maintenance Logs table are unavailable. For more information, see Data Fields Toolbar.
