Command (UPDM - DoDAF aliases)
Creation
To create a Command as a link that is not realized by any elements:
◦ From an OV-4 Typical Organizational Relationships Chart or SV-1 Systems Interface Definition: click the Command Link toolbar button, click the source Organization Type, Person Role Type or Responsibility, and then click the destination Organization Type, Person Role Type or Responsibility.
On the Select Conveyed Classifier dialog, create or select the Exchange Element that is the Command element's conveyed classifier.
◦ From an SV-10c Systems Event-Trace Description, click the Command Message toolbar button, in line with the required Statement click the source lifeline, and then click the destination lifeline.
The source and destination Resource Role elements must use an Organization Type, Person Role Type or Responsibility as their type.
On the Select Conveyed Classifier dialog, create or select the Exchange Element that is the Command element's conveyed classifier.
To create a Command that is realized by a System Interface:
◦ From an SV-1 Systems Interaction Specification: click the Command toolbar button, and then click the System Interface.
The source and destination Resource Role elements must use an Organization Type, Person Role Type or Responsibility as their type.
On the Select Conveyed Classifier dialog, create or select the Exchange Element that is the Command element's conveyed classifier.
On the context menu, click the command for the destination element.
To create a Command that is realized by a System Connector or Service Channel:
◦ From an SV-2 Systems Resource Flow Description: click the Command toolbar button, and then click the System Connector or Service Channel:
▪ For a System Connector: the Resource Role elements that own the source and destination System Port elements must use an Organization Type, Person Role Type or Responsibility as their type.
▪ For a Service Channel: the Resource Role elements that own the source and destination Service Port (Requires) and Service Port (Provides) elements must use an Organization Type, Person Role Type or Responsibility as their type.
On the Select Conveyed Classifier dialog, create or select the Exchange Element that is the Command element's conveyed classifier. On the context menu, click the command for the destination element.
To create a Command that is realized by a Control Flow (System) or Object Flow (System):
◦ From an SV-4 Systems Functionality Description: click the Command toolbar button, and then click the Control Flow (System) or Object Flow (System).
From the dialogs that appear, select the conveyed classifier, the source element of the Command, and the destination element of the Command.
The direction of the Command is set to the direction of the Control Flow (System) or Object Flow (System).
You can convert a Command to a Control or Resource Exchange: right-click the Command, point to Convert To, and then click the required command.
Realizing Elements
A Command can be realized by many System Connector, System Interface, Control Flow (System) and Object Flow (System) elements.
To define that a Command is realized by an element:
◦ Drag the Command from a Modeler pane to the System Connector, System Interface, Control Flow (System), Object Flow (System) or Service Channel on a diagram.
◦ Drag the Command element's conveyed classifier from a Modeler pane to the System Connector, System Interface, Control Flow (System), Object Flow (System) or Service Channel on a diagram. On the Select Command dialog, select the Command.
◦ Right-click the System Connector, System Interface, Control Flow (System), Object Flow (System) or Service Channel, point to Links, point to Realized, and then click Command. From the dialog, select the Command elements that realize the element you right-clicked.
If you right-click the System Connector, System Interface, Control Flow (System), Object Flow (System) or Service Channel on a diagram, the Command elements you select are added to the diagram.
You can view which elements realize a Command on the Items tab of its Property Pages. In the Show Associated list, select Realization. Do not define realized elements through the Items tab.
When a Command is realized by an element, you can change the source and target elements of the Command to those of the realized element: on a diagram that shows the Command on the realized System Connector, System Interface, Control Flow (System), Object Flow (System) or Service Channel, right-click the Command, and then click Set Ends to Realizing Flow Ends.

When shown on an OV-4 Typical Organizational Relationships Chart or SV-1 Systems Interface Definition, a Command Link appears as follows:
When shown on an SV-1 Systems Interaction Specification, SV-2 Systems Resource Flow Description or SV-4 Systems Functionality Description, a Command realization appears as follows:

To change a Command element's conveyed classifier: right-click the Command, point to Set, and then click Conveyed Classifier.
