Creating an iconic stereotype to apply an alternative icon and symbol
This topic documents creating a Stereotype through the Packages pane. For information about using a Profile Diagram to create a Stereotype and specify valid model item types, see Overview of profile diagrams.
To create an iconic stereotype to apply an alternative icon and symbol:
1. If you have not created a profile Package, create a profile Package. For more information, see Creating a profile Package.
2. Right-click the profile Package in which you want to create the Stereotype, point to New, point to UML, point to Profiles, and then click Stereotype.
3. Name the Stereotype as required.
We recommend that you prefix the name with a prefix that is common to all Stereotypes used in the Profile.
If you want the display name of the Stereotype in Modeler to be different from its real name, on the General tab of the Stereotype's property pages, type the display name in the Name Alias box.
4. Open the Stereotype's Property Pages, and then click the Items tab.
5. In the drop-down list box select Model Item Types, and then click the Link button.
6. In the middle or right pane, select the check boxes associated with valid model item types (the Stereotype can be applied only to items whose type is valid).
For more information about the model item types listed, see Model item types that can be stereotyped.
7. In the middle or right pane, clear the check boxes associated with invalid model item types.
8. Click OK.
9. Click the Style tab.
10. Click the Edit button.
11. If you want to set up an alternative image for symbols:
a. In the Image group, click the Select button, and then select the Windows metafile you want to use (WMF or EMF extension).
*
We recommend that you select WMF files that use only vector graphics. If you paste a raster graphic to another application as a WMF file, the image may be missing. Note that there is not a problem when pasting a raster graphic to another application as an EMF file, which is now typically the default in Microsoft applications.
b. If you want to display only the name of an item with an image when displayed on a diagram, select the Name Only check box.
c. If you want to maintain the aspect ratio of an image when displayed on a diagram, select the Aspect Ratio check box.
12. If you want to specify an alternative font to use, in the Font group, set the font properties for Symbols, RTF Text and Token Text: In the drop-down list, select Symbols, RTF Text or Token Text, and then click Select to set the font properties.
13. If you want to set up an alternative icon, click the Icon tab, click the Select button, and then select the Windows icon file you want to use.
14. If when you apply a Stereotype to an item and then add that item to a diagram, you want the Stereotype's alternative image to be used automatically; click the Directly-Stereotyped Optionstab, and then select the Apply to New Symbols check box.
*
The Apply to New Symbols option works only when the Stereotype is linked directly to the item.
15. Click OK.
