Generate Design Variations
You can generate design variations from an existing design in GDX.
The initial set of designs generated in GDX is based on the study defined in the Generative Design application in Creo Parametric. After generating the initial set in GDX, you can select a design and generate its variations by varying specific design goals and design constraints.
Consider an example where you have generated designs in GDX based on a combination of design criteria and materials. You select one of those designs and define a range of limit volume or limit mass, and material spreading values to create new designs. The generated variations help you explore a broader set of feasible designs.
See a quick video on how to generate design variations in GDX:
To Define Design Variations
You can define design variations as follows:
1. Select the Designs tab.
2. Click
related to a design in the table, and then click
Define Variations. The
Define Variations dialog box opens.
The Define Variations dialog box allows you to define design variations based on the design goals and design constraints defined in the initial study in Creo Parametric. For example, if the initial study contains limit volume as the design goal and material spreading as a design constraint, you can vary them using the Define Variations dialog box.
3. To define design variations, do the following:
a. Select the check box to vary a design goal or a design constraint.
b. In the From and To boxes, specify the range of variation.
c. In the Points box, specify the number of variations.
4. Click Save. The Define Variations dialog box closes.
The definitions of the design variations are added to the Setup Tree.
The number of design definitions added to the Setup Tree equals to the multiplication of the points defined for the design goals and design constraints, except when a value of a design goal or a design constraint is duplicated with a value in the initial study.
To Generate Design Variations
After defining, you can generate the design variations as follows:
1. Select the Setup tab, if not already selected.
2. In the Setup Tree, select the design definitions to generate the variations.
3. Click Generate. Generation of designs starts.
When all designs are successfully generated, the new designs are added to the table on the Designs tab. You can generate further variations from any of these designs.
A design in GDX and its generated variations do not share any relationship.
When you download a generated design variation to Creo Parametric, you need to edit the design goals and design constraints in the newly created part to match the settings used in the variation. We recommend that you make these edits and save the model.
