About Import Log Files
You can generate import log files for most 3D formats that you import to Creo and view the details of the log files in the Creo browser. These details are useful for the analysis, interrogation, and diagnosis of the import process. Based on the analysis of the information, you can implement recovery measures for the failed import processes and sub-tasks.
The Generate log file option is selected by default in the Import New Model and the File dialog boxes. Import log files are, therefore, automatically generated when you perform the import, append, and assemble tasks. The import details are stored as XML files saved to disk and with the model in session. The individual part components and subassemblies too store the details of the import. They store the import log information for a single import. For subsequent import of the model or tasks such as insertion in a part, Associative Topology Bus (ATB) updates of the model, and file reload of an import feature of the part, the previous information is overwritten. This information is not saved to the model and is only valid for the current Creo session.
The XML log files have the _log.xml extension with the model names and are generated, by default, in the working directory. Although short XML log files are generated by default, the XML log files even include the import details of the sub-models. During the import, append, or assemble process, you can select Long in the Import New Model or the File dialog box to generate a detailed import log file.
They details of the import stored in the XML file and the model in session are as follows:
General information, such as the interface type, filename, and model name.
The names and versions of the input files.
The date and time of the commencement and the completion of the import process and the actual process time.
The entities imported with details such as their type and number.
The status of the import whether successful, partial, or failed.
The errors encountered during the import, and the accompanying warnings, indicated by stop lights in distinct colors.
The details of the errors, such as the entity types not imported by their IDs and names and the reasons for skipping their import as comments.
Entities not supported by the import process.
The placement of geometry in assemblies and missing components.
You can use the Tools > Investigate > Import Log File command to access the details of the XML log files and display them in the Creo browser at runtime. You can also generate and view log files offline in the Creo browser, using the import details stored with the model in session. You can include or exclude the import details of the sub-models and choose a long or short format. A short format consists of warnings, errors, the duration of the import, and general information such as the file and model name and the interface type. A long format includes all details of the import.
The offline generation and display of the import log files enable you to diagnose and identify import problems dynamically without generating the XML import log files on disk. The XML log files when stored with the model are for future reference. You can print the log files displayed in the Creo browser or save them as HTML files.
