About Importing Drawing and Model Files
You can import model and drawing files that belong to the various file formats that Creo supports. Click File > Open or click on the Quick Access Toolbar to import 3D model and drawing files.
The import of 3D models generally includes the tasks of appending and assembling the imported models in the native part and assembly models.
Use the Model > Get Data > Import command to import and insert part models of the supported file formats in the parts that you opened in Creo.
Use the Component > Assemble > Assemble command to import and assemble part and assembly models of the supported file formats as components of assemblies that you have opened in Creo.
Format-specific import profile editors enable you to create import profiles for the individual file formats. You can use the format-specific import profiles for the model import, insert, and assemble tasks. Additional options are also available in the Import New Model and the File dialog boxes for the following tasks:
Specify the import data type of the models.
Use custom start part and assembly template files.
Open the ATB-enabled Translated Image Model (TIM) assemblies as one of the following representations:
Master or full representation of the geometric and non-geometric data
Graphic representation for visualization
Product structure and meta data
Selectively import layers and reset layer filters.
Generate short or long log files with details of the import and append tasks.
The import, insert, and assemble tasks create imported features in Creo that are displayed on the Model Tree. The bodies of standalone part models and the part components of assemblies are imported along with the models when you perform these tasks. The number of solid bodies contained in the imported part models and part components of assemblies corresponds with the number of solid bodies contained in the source models. The source part models and part components can contain multiple bodies or a single body. The Bodies folder that is the first node of the imported part or the part component on the Model Tree contains the solid bodies of the imported models. The number of solid bodies contained in the Bodies folder appears in parenthesis next to the Bodies folder.
If required, the imported model names can be modified so that the names conform to the Creo naming conventions of length and valid characters. This avoids name conflicts with the models in session. Import log files are automatically generated in the working directory for the import, insert, and assemble tasks.
