Publishing Rules Overview
A publishing rule saves your favorite publishing settings for a particular document type and output in a reusable format, and then you can choose the rule over and over again when you publish a document. A rule set is simply a collection of publishing rules that you want to run on the same document at the same time.
Publishing rules and rule sets are saved in a publishing rule configuration file (with a .prcf file extension). To choose a publishing rule or rule set, open your document and then choose File > Publish > Using Rule. You can choose a rule or rule set from the list in the Publish Using Rule dialog box. The list applies to the current document type and the current publishing mode.
A publishing rule or rule set is targeted either for local use or for server use with Arbortext Publishing Engine. You will be able to use only one type or the other at a time.
You can view your entire set of publishing rules and rule sets by choosing Tools > Administrative Tools > Publishing Rules. The Target column displays whether a rule or rule set is a local rule or a server rule.
You can create and use publishing rules if you are Using Arbortext Publishing Engine for Publishing Documents, or if you are publishing locally with Arbortext Styler, a Print Composer license or a Web/Wireless Composer license. In the Publish Using Rule dialog box, you will be offered only local rules or server rules, depending on which publishing mode you are currently using.
If you are using Arbortext Publishing Engine for publishing, the Publish Using Rule dialog box displays the rules or rule sets specifically used for publishing on the server. The list is the combination of rules and rule sets available from the Arbortext PE server and rules and rule sets created locally specifically for use with the Arbortext PE server. Rules and rule sets created for local publishing are ignored, and you won’t be able to choose one.
If you are publishing locally, the Publish Using Rule dialog box displays the rules or rule sets specifically used for publishing locally. Rules and rule sets targeted for server publishing are ignored, and you won’t be able to choose one.
Create publishing rules in the following ways:
Choose Tools > Administrative Tools > Publishing Rules
Choose any File > Publish output type and look for Create Rule at the bottom of the dialog box.
The type of rule you create is based on the type of publishing currently in use, local or server, regardless of the document you might be editing. The rule type is permanently associated with where publishing is performed, not with a particular document.
You can check Tools > Preferences > Publshing Engine to see if you are using Arbortext Publishing Engine. If the check box is clear, then you are publishing locally if you have correct licensing in place.
If you have Arbortext Styler, you can create local publishing rules. To see which publishing components are licensed for your use locally, open the About Arbortext Editor by choosing Help > About Arbortext Editor > Session.
