Publishing Processing
If the Arbortext PE server is installed on a Windows server, you may have a choice of publishing engines for print and PDF publishing: PTC Arbortext Layout Developer (PTC ALD), FOSI, or XSL-FO. The Print Engine being used is displayed in the Print and Publish > PDF File dialog boxes. For more information on these publishing engines, see Publishing engine overview.
*
The FOSI and XSL-FO print engines are on sustained support and do not receive enhancements or maintenance fixes. PTC ALD is the recommended engine for print/PDF output.
The effective print engine for your environment is based on the result of evaluating settings made in Arbortext Editor, Arbortext Styler (if applicable), Arbortext Publishing Engine (if applicable) and your stylesheet. The effective print engine is determined by the stylesheet as well as other actions. You can choose the print engine setting in the Arbortext Styler stylesheet or as a general preference in your Arbortext Editor session. For information about how the effective print engine is determined, refer to Logic for print/preview engine selection.
For information about stylesheets, please refer to the Administrator's Guide, the User's Guide to Arbortext Styler, and the FOSI Reference.
For information about using PTC Arbortext Layout Developer for publishing, refer to Integration of PTC Arbortext Layout Developer in Arbortext Styler.
If you are publishing a PDF file or previewing using PTC ALD, you need to have Adobe Reader installed locally to view the returned PDF.
If you are publishing for HTML Help, the HTML Help Workshop for HTML Help must be installed on the Windows Arbortext PE server. If the View box is checked, Arbortext Editor will open the HTML Help viewer on the local system.
If you are publishing for web, wireless, PDA or an HTML file and you check the View box, you need to have a supported web browser installed locally.
If you are publishing for EPUB, Calibre 0.8.0 or later must be installed on the Arbortext Editor client. Declare the install directory with the set epubinstalldir command. Refer to Publishing EPUB Output for further information.
If you queue your publishing request, you will be prompted about viewing a returned document when you retrieve the result from the Arbortext PE server.
The values for some set command options are sent to the Arbortext PE server during a publishing request and take effect only for the duration of processing the publishing request. These values are not changed on the server as a result.
The values for the following set command options are sent to the Arbortext PE server to be applied during FOSI or XSL-FO publishing.

When your Arbortext Styler stylesheet specifies the FOSI publishing engine or if you specify a .fos stylesheet, some additional options for reporting format faults are sent to the server to take effect during publishing.

These are not supported for PTC Arbortext Layout Developer or XSL-FO publishing.
