Generated Text Overview
Generated text is text that is automatically created by the FOSI/stylesheet for the document. This includes table of contents, chapter numbers, bullets (for bulleted lists), step numbers (for procedures and numbered lists), and endnotes. The screen format specification (screen FOSI/stylesheet) for your document type determines what text is to be generated automatically.
You can automatically display the generated text while you edit your document. As soon as you create a numbered list or add a chapter, the appropriate numbers appear without you having to perform a separate step to generate them.
Generated text is not stored as text in your document file. When you display generated text, the FOSI/stylesheet is accessed.
The format specification provides instructions on:
What text to store for generated text usage (such as the contents of title tags)
Where the generated text should be stored (such as generating a table of contents using the title tag contents, or an index using index tag contents).
Format specification instructions also determine the counters for such generated text items as numbered lists, chapter numbers, and page numbers.
If you experience a slowdown in computer performance when generated text is displayed, we recommend either setting the generated text auto-update to partial, or hiding generated text when you do not need to see the content.
