About Renaming Assemblies and Components
When you rename an assembly or subassembly, you can rename it only for this session or rename it permanently. You have the option to rename any or all of the assembly components as well. It is best practice to rename all components in the assembly. Components that are not renamed create external references to the original assembly and components before the rename operation.
The Assembly Rename dialog box displays the source assembly structure so you can see the hierarchy of components. By default each component is selected to be reused, but you can choose to give it a new name. When you rename a subassembly, all of its components are given an automatically generated new name. When you reuse a subassembly, all components in the subassembly are reused.
You can automatically generate new names. The default renaming convention is the old name appended with a default suffix. You can change the suffix, create a template for renaming, or include a prefix.
