About Aligning a Sketch and Its Grid
When creating a sketch, you can reorient a sketch and its grid along the following references:
A datum plane or a planar surface normal to the sketch plane. In the latter case the grid is aligned along the direction of intersection of the sketch plane and the normal plane.
A sketched linear entity.
A background linear entity that lies on the sketch plane.
A background linear entity that does not lie on the sketch plane and is not normal to the sketch plane. In this case the grid is aligned in the direction of the projection of the entity on the sketch plane.
You can also align the grid of a sketch with a reference entity as described in the next table. After the alignment, you can use the view orientation tools to adjust the orientation. The adjustment orientation then defines the sketch plan view.
Scenario
Result
The grid is in the sketch plan view.
The grid does not rotate. Instead the sketch rotates to align the reference entity with the grid.
The grid is not in the sketch plan view.
The orientation of the sketch does not change. Instead the grid rotates to align itself with the reference entity.
