Coordinate dimensioning with an external base point
An additional option when creating coordinate dimensions is to create the dimensions on one view with respect to a base point on another, external view. An external base point can be used when dimensioning two views having the same view direction. This is useful for detail views and their parent views.
You can dimension with external base points in two ways:
Transfer an existing coordinate dimension from a parent view to its detail view.
Specify the base point on one view and then specify the reference points for the coordinate dimensions on the second view.
In both the cases the dimension is created on the second view (the detail view). When transferring existing dimensions, you also have the option to remove the dimension label from the original view.
The procedures for both these methods are described below. Fixes and tolerances are added as before.
To transfer an existing coordinate dimension,
1. Click Annotation and then, in the Annotate group, click the arrow next to Linear.
2. Click Coordinate. The Coordinates Dim dialog box opens.
3. Click External Base Pnt.
4. Click the dimension to be transferred.
The Destination View section appears in the Coordinates Dim dialog box, prompting you to specify a target view for the dimension.
5. To remove the dimension from the original view, clear the Keep check box.
6. Click the view to which you want to transfer the selected dimension.
7. Click a position on the view for the dimension. Note that this also determines the length of the dimension line.
8. Continue adding coordinate dimensions to the target view, or click to complete the operation.
By default, the transferred dimension's direction is taken from the source dimension, but you can change this after specifying the target view and before positioning the dimension.
To create a new coordinate dimension using an external base point,
1. Click Annotation and then, in the Annotate group, click the arrow next to Linear.
2. Click Coordinate. The Coordinates Dim dialog box opens.
3. Click External Base Pnt.
4. On the original (external) view, click the base point for the coordinate dimension group.
5. Click a reference element on the target view to dimension.
6. Click a position for the dimension.
7. Continue adding coordinate dimensions to the target view, or click to complete the operation.
