*What is FLEXlm and what are the advantages of using FLEXlm over the current PTC licensing?
FLEXlm is a commercial license management system developed by Globetrotter? Inc. FLEXlm has been chosen as the license manager of choice for more than 15,000 products worldwide. Today, FLEXlm manages software licenses on some of the largest wide area and local area networks in the world. System administrators have come to know and expect FLEXlm for license management solutions. As requested by our customers, PTC has chosen FLEXlm for its stability, capability, and flexibility.
*How can I learn more about how FLEXlm
works today?
GLOBEtrotter Software Inc developed FLEXlm and their web site (www.globetrotter.com) contains a complete set of on-line FLEXlm documentation.
*Will a non-root license server installation
be offered?
Yes. With the introduction of FLEXlm as PTC's license server, a non-root server installation will now be available. In fact, Globetrotter recommends that the FLEXlm server NOT be executed as root, but the application files should be installed as root. As root, the installation script can make links in /bin allowing users to find the application via those links, without introducing any FLEXlm security concerns.
The runtime UID is the issue, not the file ownership. In most environments, lmgrd and the vendor daemons will be started at boot time, with a line like this:
su <non-root username> -c '<lmgrd startup command>'
*How will FLEXlm handle floating licenses
of multiple products on the same license server for example Pro/ENGINEER
and Pro/MECHANICA?
During the installation, the FLEXlm software should reside in a unique directory outside of the PTC product loadpoints and should be installed first before any of the PTC products. In this process, the license file supplied by PTC will be entered into the configuration. This license file contains the authorization lines for all of the PTC products being distributed by this license server. This process configures FLEXlm to serve licenses for both products Pro/ENGINEER and Pro/MECHANICA.
*Is FLEXlm supported on all hardware
platforms currently supported by PTC?
Yes. FLEXlm is currently supported on all of the PTC certified platforms and does not introduce any new hardware, networking or operating system configurations not already required to run PTC products.
*Can all PTC products be managed by FLEXlm
with one license file?
The PTC deamon for FLEXlm can access a single license file per server for authorizing licenses for all PTC products.
When a new option such as Pro/SHEETMETAL is purchased as an add-on to an existing license of Pro/ENGINEER, a complete new feature line will be sent to the customer with the new module added into the feature line. This new feature line supersedes any existing feature line for this license and is simply added to the existing license.dat file through Pro/SETUP.
*Where should the FLEXlm server be installed?
The FLEXlm server should be installed into it's own loadpoint outside of any of the PTC product loadpoints. The SETUP utility prompts for a FLEXlm installation directory separate from the PTC Product directory. This separation allows for independent configuration and modification of the FLEXlm server and PTC product directories.
*How can the customer contact FLEXlm
if the issue is determined not to be PTC related?
PTC Technical Support will be prepared to address most technical issues involving the FLEXlm server or to appropriately direct the issue to a knowledgeable party to resolve the issue.
The option timeout_multiplier will not be used with the FLEXlm implementation into PTC products.
FLEXlm doesn't interoperate with SNMP in any way. It can certainly co-exist with systems that use SNMP. There's one minor exception: on NT systems, we optionally use MSoft's SNMP to get the ethernet hostid.
Yes. FLEXlm does support hostname aliases.
