Entering MIL-HDBK-217 Rotating Devices
The following table describes the part parameters required for rotating devices when a MIL-HDBK-217 model is selected for the calculation. MIL-HDBK-217 models support both subcategories for rotating devices, Motor and Other.
Parameter
Type
Description
Operating Time
Integer (Hours) [FN1 only]
Required only for the Motor subcategory.
The motor operating time period for which the average failure rate is calculated. Each motor must be replaced when it reaches the end of this operating period to make the calculation valid.
Life Cycle
Integer (Hours) [excluding FN1]
Required only for the Motor subcategory.
The system design life cycle or motor preventive maintenance interval if the motor is periodically replaced or refurbished. The unit is hours.
Type
Choice List
Required for the Motor subcategory by all models but FN1. Required for the Other category by all models.
The type of device. Choices vary based on the subcategory and/or model.
Size
Choice List
Required for the Other subcategory for only the Synchro and Resolver part types.
The device size. Choices are:
8 or smaller
10 to 16
18 or larger
Number of Brushes
Choice List
Required for the Other subcategory for only the Synchro and Resolver part types.
The number of brushes in the device. Choices are:
2
3
4
Elapsed Time Meter Type
Choice List [Parts Count also]
Required only for the Elapsed Time Meter part type in the Other subcategory. Choices are:
AC
DC Commutator
Inverter Driven
Max Rated Temp
Real (Degrees C)
Required only for the Other subcategory.
The rated maximum operating temperature of the device.
Temperature Rise
Real (Degrees C)
The temperature rise from the subassembly to the frame temperature.
Frame Temperature Override
Real (Degrees C)
Generally, this field is left at #.#. so that the frame temperature override is calculated as follows:
Frame Temperature Override = Subassembly Temperature + Temperature Rise
If you enter a value for this parameter, this value is used in place of a calculated frame temperature override.
