Inserting a Part Definition
You insert a part definition in the Part Definition pane so that failure modes for this part type can be inserted in the Modes pane.
1. In the last table row in the Part Definition pane, click < Click here to insert a new record >.
The Add Part Definition window opens. For more information, see Add/Edit Part Definition Window.
2. Complete this window and click OK to insert the part definition.
To add a part definition, the classification, category, and subcategory selected in the Add Part Definition window must be valid.
Selecting < Any Part Classification > makes the part definition applicable to all classifications As a result, only < Any Category > and < Any Subcategory > are available for Category and Subcategory. If a part definition is not found for a specific part, the failure modes associated with this default part definition are inserted for the part. Selecting a specific part classification makes the categories for this classification available for Category.
Selecting < Any Category > makes the part definition applicable to all categories. Selecting a specific category makes the subcategories for this category available for Subcategory.
Selecting < Any Subcategory > makes the part definition applicable to all subcategories. Selecting a specific subcategory makes the part definition applicable to only this subcategory.
Selecting < Any IEC 62380 Type > for an RDF 2000/IEC part makes the part definition applicable to all IEC 62380 failure mode types. Selecting a specific IEC 62380 failure mode type makes the part definition applicable to only this type.
The FMEA Modes Library file does not permit duplicate part definitions. If the part definition is not unique, a window opens, indicating that a record with these values already exists. When you click OK, you return to the Add Part Definition pane so that you can either make modifications or click Cancel to close this window without inserting the record.
If the part definition is unique, a record is inserted in the Part Definition pane. In the hierarchical tree structure of this record, the lowest level of the definition is selected by default so that you can insert failure modes for this part type. For more information, see Inserting Failure Modes for a Part.
