Inserting Multiple Causes for a Failure Mode
When the Causes table is shown in the FMEA Modes Library file, you can insert multiple causes per failure mode. In the properties for this support file, General > Display Causes controls whether this table is hidden or shown.
1. If the FMEA Modes Library file is not already open, then open it.
2. If the Causes table is hidden, show it. For more information, see Showing or Hiding the Causes Table in the FMEA Modes Library File.
3. In the Part Definition pane, select the part subcategory.
4. In the Modes pane, select the failure mode.
5. For each cause to insert, do the following:
a. In the last row in the Causes table, click < Click here to insert a new record > in the last row.
The Add Cause window opens. For more information, see Add Cause Window.
b. Complete this window and click OK to insert the cause.
You can make modifications directly in the Causes table. If you copy and paste a mode, all causes associated with it are also copied and pasted.
When data is copied into a FMEA from a FMEA Modes Library file, the following rules are used for modes that have multiple causes:
If the FMEA data structure is item/mode or item/mode/effect, only the first cause for each mode is copied into the FMEA. This is because there is nowhere to store the additional causes.
If the FMEA data structure is item/mode/cause, item/mode/cause/effect, or item/mode/cause/effect, all causes for each mode are copied into the FMEA.
If the FMEA data structure is item/mode/effect/cause, no causes are copied into the FMEA. This is because there is no way to determine which effect to use as the parent of the causes.
