Calculations Pane
The Calculations pane displays the user-defined calculations in the Calculation file. For calculations that are not automatically calculated, results are computed in the order in which selected calculations appear on the User Defined Calculations page in the Calculate window. The following table describes the columns in the Calculations pane.
Column
Description
Calculation Name
The unique name assigned to the calculation.
Module
Indicates the tables to make available for selection in the Calculation Editor pane. For example, if FRACAS is selected FRACAS tables are made available for selection in the Calculation Editor pane. You can define calculations for the following modules: FMEA, FRACAS, FTA, Maintainability, Prediction, and RBD.
Calculation Type
Indicates whether the calculation to perform is on a numeric field using aggregate functions or a text field using text manipulation functions. Choices are Number and Text. The default is Number.
When Number is selected, the button and command for inserting fields are available. For more information, see Field Functions.
When Text is selected, the button and command for inserting text are available. For more information, see Text Functions.
Calculate Automatically
Indicates whether to perform the calculation for the record at the time you enter or update a value for a data field used in the equation. This checkbox is display-only until the equation for the calculation is entered for Calculations in the Calculation Editor pane. This is because the equation must first be checked to see if an automatic calculation can be performed. When this checkbox is cleared (default), the calculation is performed only if you select it on the User Defined Calculations page in the Calculate window. For more information, see User Defined Page. When this checkbox is selected, the calculation is performed when you enter or update an equation field value. Additional information about automatic calculations follows this table.
Calculation Summary
Displays the data field in which to store the calculation result, an equal sign, and then the equation entered for Calculations in the Calculation Editor pane. This column is display-only. The icon for the field is not shown like it is for Calculations in the Calculation Editor pane. For more information, see Data Fields.
Remarks
Any notes or comments about the calculation.
Clicking < Click here to insert a new record > in the last table row inserts a new calculation. For more information, see Inserting a Calculation.
Automatic Calculations
Automatic calculations are supported for both numeric and text calculations, providing that they can be performed on a record-by-record basis. Automatic calculations are not available when inputs include fields from calculation result tables. Automatic calculations are also not supported for calculations that update multiple records at once. When a calculation updates multiple records simultaneously, Calculate Automatically becomes unavailable.
For example, if the calculation takes the value entered for User Value 1 in the System Tree Items table and stores it as the result for User Value 1 in the FRACAS Incidents table, Calculate Automatically becomes unavailable because what you enter in User Value 1 in the System Tree Items table cannot be automatically calculated for all incidents associated with that item. To perform this user-defined calculation, in the Calculate window, you must select User Defined on the Calculation Selection page and the checkbox for this calculation on the User Defined page.
