Part Family Behavior During PDM Actions
Depending on whether an operation results in creating a new iteration, a NX part family is treated by Windchill either as an inseparable object (that is, the action applies to the entire family) or as a separable object (that is, individual members can be acted on independently of each other).
For the following operations, a NX part family is treated as an inseparable object:
Save or Save to Workspace
Check In
Upload
Check Out
Undo Check Out
Update
Save As
For the following operations, a NX part family is treated as a separable object:
Add to Workspace or Add
Remove from Workspace
Rename
Promote
Set State
Edit Properties (only non-file based attributes may be edited)
Revise

Although you can revise an individual instance, it is best practice to revise all family members.
The next topics detail the behavior of part families during specific PDM actions.
