Rules for Adding Part Family Objects to a Workspace
Consider these rules for using Add to Workspace on the part family objects:
You can add a top-level generic to the workspace without adding related instance CAD documents. When the generic is added to the workspace, the generic’s CAD file and the part family template are added to the Local Workspace.
If you want to add an instance to the workspace, the generic must always be included as a required dependent.
If you have manually attached the part family template to the generic CAD document, it behaves as a secondary content for the CAD document.
If you select to check out an instance when adding to the workspace, then the entire family (generic and all other instances) are added to the workspace and checked out as well.
