Creating a New Part
Create a software part using the New Part action in Windchill. The New Part window opens.
*
Software parts do not contain primary source content or attachment content.
The New Part window divides the creation of the part into the following steps:
Step 1: Set Context — Identify Context
The context represents the product, library, or project within which this part is created. This step is only available when the action is launched from a workspace.
Identify the context for software part using the following fields:
Field Name
Description
Type
Select Software Part from the Type drop-down list.
Create as End Item
Identifies the top assembly part in a product structure that is manufactured and delivered to customers.
Step 2: Set Attributes — Identify Attributes
In the Attributes section, specify attributes for the software part using the following fields:
Field Name
Description
Number
If the part number is not automatically generated, enter a unique part number.
Name
Specifies the name of the new software part; this field is required. Enter up to 60 characters.
View
Specifies the type of software part. Select one of the following from the drop-down list:
Design -- The part is a design assembly.
Manufacturing -- The part is a manufacturing assembly.
Assembly Mode
Specifies the type of software part; this field is required. Select one of the following from the drop-down list:
Separable -- The part is an assembly that can be disassembled safely.
Inseparable -- The part is an assembly that, once built, cannot be disassembled safely.
Component -- The part is a component of an assembly.
*
This attribute applies more to mechanical, electrical, and electronic parts than to software components. It is recommended that you select the default mode of Separable for this attribute.
Source
Specifies the source for the software part; this field is required. Select one of the following from the drop-down list:
Make -- The software is made internally.
Buy  -- The software is out-sourced or purchased externally.
Buy Single Source -- The software is out-sourced or purchased externally as a single source.

A unit can be defined as each, as needed, kilograms, meters, liters, square meters, and cubic meters.
*
It is recommended that you accept the default value of each for this attribute.
Default Trace Code
Indicates if the part is traceable and if so how it is traceable. Select one of the following from the drop-down list:
Lot -- Part is traceable by lot number.
Lot/Serial Number -- Part is traceable by using a combination of lot and serial number.
Serial Number -- Part is traceable by serial number.
Untraced -- Part is not traceable. This is the default selection.
Stop Effectivity Propagation
If available, represents whether effectivity propagation is applicable for the part.
Location
Specifies the location for the software part. Select one of the following from the drop-down list:
Autoselect Folder (Default) -- The system automatically selects the default folder.
Select Folder  -- Allows you to select the folder manually.

Keep Checked Out after Checkin
Select this option to keep the software part checked out after the check-in of the part in Windchill.
Click the Keep checked out after checkin check box to keep the part checked out after it is created.
After you have set the attributes, click Finish to complete the software part creation. A confirmation message appears after you have successfully created the software part. The software part object is then available in the Folder Contents table of the folder.
