Creating a Purge Job
*
If you are planning to purge a large number of objects, you should plan to do so during time periods of low Windchill interactive user activity.
Use the following steps to create a purge job:
1. From Purge Management, click the new job icon . The New Job window opens.
2. In the Name field, enter a unique name for the job.
3. Optionally, in the Description field, enter a brief description of the job. Click Next.
4. Next to the Query field, click Find to locate the query that you want to use. The Query Picker window opens.
Enter the search criteria for the query. To see all queries, you can leave the search criteria blank. Then, click Search.
*
If necessary, you can create a new query by clicking the new query icon . For more information, see Creating a Query.
5. Select the appropriate query and then click OK and then Next.
6. Optionally, select the types of conflicts that you want to automatically override during the purge process:
Downloaded to a workspace—Select this checkbox to automatically override conflicts when the object is downloaded to the workspace. The resolution is to remove the object from the workspace before it is purged.
Shared to a project—Select this checkbox to automatically override conflicts when an object is shared.
*
If you purge a shared object iteration, the shared project version is automatically updated to the latest iteration. However, project users are not notified and the out-of-sync status icon does not display.
As a result, project users might be unaware that shared object has changed.
7. Click Next.
8. Specify when you want the job to run:
Immediate—Select this option to run the job immediately. Specify the Preview Options and Preview Format.
Select from the following Preview Options:
No preview—Select this option if you do not want to view the list of objects to be purged.
Preview now—Select this option to view the list of objects to be purged immediately.
Preview later—Select this option to view the list of objects to be purged later.
Select from the following Preview Format options:
Text—Select this option to preview the Affected Objects List in text.
HTML—Select this option to preview the objects in the Collected Objects window, where you can exclude individual objects.
*
You may want to change the Preview Limit preference to improve performance. To do so, navigate to the Preference Management utility, and expand the Purge category.
The Preview Limit preference controls the maximum number of objects collected in the HTML preview table. The default is 500.
If more objects are collected than the table size allows, only the current page of the table displays the objects submitted for purge. An alert appears to notify the user that not all objects collected are submitted.
This preference is available for site and organization administrators.
Scheduled—Select this option to run the job later or on a regular schedule. Specify the following options:
Job Start On—The date and time when the job starts
Job Frequency—The frequency at which the schedule runs
Job End—Select End Date and choose the date the job ends, or select End After and enter the number of times that the job runs.
9. Click Next.
10. One of the following occurs:
If you selected Immediate, Preview now, and Text, a link to the Affected Objects List appears. Click the link and review the information.
If you selected Immediate, Preview now, and HTML, the Collected Objects list appears. Review the information and exclude objects if appropriate.
If you selected Immediate and Preview later, a notification appears to tell you how to review the list of objects to be purged.
If you selected Scheduled, a summary of the options appears. Review the information.
11. Click Finish.

A purge job makes the associated files on disk unreferenced. To cleanup these unreferenced files, use the RemoveUnreferencedFiles tool from command-line interface. For more details, refer the section “RemoveUnreferencedFiles Tool” in Windchill Vault Configuration.
