Getting Connected Using the Server Management Utility
*
Server Management functionality is only available in Windchill PDMLink orWindchill ProjectLink.
The Server Management utility is a user interface in the Windchill Workgroup Manager and Creo Parametric that allows you to connect to and manage one or more PDM (Product Data Management) servers. You set a primary server to indicate which server should act as the default location for all storage and retrieval PDM functions performed with your CAD application. You can set any registered server as the primary server by using the Server Management window or the Folder Navigator. You can also change the primary server at any time and set another server to be the primary server.
You can create one or more workspaces on each server, though only one workspace at a time can be your active workspace. The active workspace on your primary server is the first place Creo Parametric looks when processing retrieval or storage activities.
The Server Management utility has two tabs: Servers and Cache. The Servers tab contains information about your servers and workspaces. When the Servers tab is selected, you have access to information about your registered servers and workspaces. The Cache tab displays workspace cache information and cache management tools.
Server Management Utility Menus
The File menu of the Server Management utility includes the command described in the following table:
Command
Description
Save Settings As
Brings up the Save Server Management Settings File window in which you can select a location and save your Server Management settings as a Servers Configuration File (*.fld)
The Server menu of the Server Management utility includes the commands described in the following table:
Command
Description
Register New Server
Calls the Register New Server window where you can register a new server.
*
Connecting to a server involves authentication. For more information on authentication, see the topic, “Authentication” in the Windchill Help Center.
Set as Primary Server
Sets the selected server as your primary server
Edit
Calls the Server Property window where you can edit the server properties, including name, location, and active workspace.
Delete
Deletes the selected server
*
Primary servers cannot be deleted. You must designate a different server or NO SERVER as primary to delete the current primary server.
Work Offline
Allows you to work with the workspace when not connected to the server. For more information about working offline, see About Offline Workspace Functionality
The Workspace menu of the Server Management utility includes the commands described in the following table:
Column
Description
New
Allows you to create a new workspace on the primary server and make it active
Activate
Workspace—Activates the selected workspace (available only when you select an inactive workspace)
or
Workspace and Set Primary—Activates the workspace and sets its corresponding server as your primary server (available only if you select an inactive workspace on an additional server)
Lock Workspace
Locks or unlocks the selected workspace
Delete
Deletes the selected workspace. (Workspace must be inactive to be deleted.)
Import Workspace
Import a portable workspace. For more information, see Exporting and Importing Workspaces
Export Workspace
Export a portable workspace. For more information, see Exporting and Importing Workspaces
Make Available Offline
Makes the workspace ready for offline use (only available in Creo Parametric). For more information about working offline, see About Offline Workspace Functionality
The Cache Tab
The Cache tab displays the following information:
Cache location on local machine
Target cache limit (if set)
Total cache used
Available disk space
Clicking Clear next to the Total Cache Used value allows you to clear the cache. Clicking Cache Tools displays the Cache Management window which also reports cache information and allows you to clear the cache.
Primary and Additional Servers
TheWindchill Workgroup Manager and Creo Parametric allow you to simultaneously connect to multiple Windchill PDM servers. To avoid confusing the multiple data sources, it is recommended that you designate a primary server. The primary server acts as the default location for all storage and retrieval PDM functions performed with your registered CAD application. Your company’s Windchill server is usually your primary server.
Any other servers that you may register are referred to as additional servers.
