Template Use
The use of some templates is automatically restricted to specific users. For example, the project, program, product, and library templates are only available to those users who can create projects, program, products, and libraries.
Other templates, such as document templates, are usually available to a wider group of users. In this case, all users who create documents have access to document templates. (Arbortext Content Manager or Windchill PDMLink only)
Access to templates is also determined by the context under which the template was created and the context under which a user is trying to access the template.
For example, consider the following template creation activities:
Clicking a new template icon on a product Templates page starts the template creation activity in the context of the current product. For example, clicking the new document template icon from the Bike123 product Templates page associates the template being created with the Bike123 product. The template is not available for use in other products or in any libraries.
Clicking a new template icon on a site Templates page starts the template creation activity in the context of the site. For example, clicking new document template icon from the site Templates page associates the template being created with the site. The template is then available for use in all organizations, products, libraries, programs, and projects (if both Windchill PDMLink and Windchill ProjectLink are installed).
In another example, assume that a Windchill solution has two organizations (ABC and XYZ) and two products (Stuffed Sofa product that is under the ABC organization and Upscale Bike product that is under the XYZ organization). From this solution, assume that the following document templates are created:
A Basic Company document template is created from Site > Templates.
A Basic Organization document template is created from Organizations > Templates in the context of the XYZ organization.
A Basic Company document template is created from Products > Templates in the context of the Upscale Bike product that is under the XYZ organization. This template has the same name as a document template that was created from Site > Templates.
An Engineering document template is created from Products > Templates in the context of the Upscale Bike product that is under the XYZ organization.
A Manufacturing document template is created from Products > Templates in the context of the Stuffed Sofa product that is under the ABC organization.
A user creating a document from the context of the Stuffed Sofa product is able to select from the following document templates:
Basic Company -- created from Site > Templates
Manufacturing -- created in the context of the Stuffed Sofa product
A user creating a document from the context of the Upscale Bike product is able to select from the following document templates:
Basic Company -- created in context of the Upscale Bike product (rather than the one created from Site > Templates)
Basic Organization -- created in context of the XYZ organization
Engineering -- created in the context of the Upscale Bike product
Template use is also affected by the visibility of the template in the context under which a user is trying to access the template. See Filtering the Visibility of Templates.
