Logging In to the Windchill RV&S Client
Windchill RV&S uses client/server architecture to protect and manage your files. Project files, items, queries, charts, reports, and dashboards reside on the server in a database and are accessed by requests from the client application on your workstation. Problems and error messages on the Windchill RV&S client are logged to installdir/bin/IntegrityClient.log.
In the Web interface, you must establish a connection with the Windchill RV&S server before you can perform any operations.
In the command line interface, you must establish a connection with the Windchill RV&S server when you perform a command that requires a connection with the Windchill RV&S server.
In the GUI, you establish a connection with the Windchill RV&S server when you open a specific view that requires a connection with the Windchill RV&S server. Upon opening a view, the Windchill RV&S client consults your server connection preferences and connects to the server associated with the view. For example, when you open a Projects or Items view, theWindchill RV&S client connects to the server specified in your server connection preferences. Depending on your server connection preferences, you may be prompted to specify server information and credentials.
*
If you work with multiple Windchill RV&S servers, you must configure your server connection preferences to prompt you for server information. If you do not configure your server connection preferences to prompt you for server information, the view you are opening attempts to connect to the server listed in your server connection preferences.
Key Considerations
All or some of the login dialog boxes may appear, depending on the configuration setup by your administrator.
Ensure that the Windchill RV&S server you are connecting to is the same version as your Windchill RV&S client. Attempting to connect with an incompatible client (for example, from an earlier version) results in error messages and unpredictable behavior. To determine the version of your Windchill RV&S client, do one of the following:
In the Windchill RV&S client, select Help > About. The dialog box displays version information for the Windchill RV&S release, build, service pack (if installed), API, and HotFixes (if installed).
On Windows, hover over or right-click in the system tray. For more information, see “Windchill RV&S Client System Tray Icon”.
To determine the version of the Windchill RV&S server, contact your administrator, or in the command line interface, use the si servers --showversion or im servers --showversion command.
If your preferences are not set to prompt for a server connection, the Specify Server Connection dialog box does not appear.
To disconnect from the Windchill RV&S server in the active view, select File > Disconnect Server Connection and then user@hostname:port. For more details, see “Logging Out of the Windchill RV&S Client”.
After connecting to a Windchill RV&S server, you may be prompted to install (or rollback) a service pack. Your administrator specifies if a service pack installation (or rollback) is optional or required. If you are unsure how to proceed when prompted, contact your administrator for more information.
