History
Due to the increasing necessity to exchange requirements between different partners using different Requirements Management tools, the Simulation and Tools Group of the Hersteller Initiative Software (HIS), a German automotive association, started the definition of the Requirements Interchange Format (RIF) in 2004.

Start of specification for the RIF specification
2005
Public availability of RIF 1.0a specification.
End of 2005
The Verband der Automobilindustrie (VDA), the German automotive industry association, recommends RIF as the requirements exchange format.
2006
First public release of Windchill Requirements Connector and first industrial RIF based exchanges.
2007
Public availability of RIF 1.1a specification.
2008
Public availability of RIF 1.2 specification.
2011
Public availability of OMG ReqIF 1.0.1 specification (rebranding due to naming conflict at Object Management Group with Rule Interchange Format)
2013
Public availability of ReqIF 1.1 specification (no schema changes just textual changes inside the specification)
