Upgrading a database (Model Explorer)
When a database requires an upgrade, Model Explorer provides users/administrators with the following indications:
The database icon changes to indicate uninitialized repositories.
The database properties pane and the list view display the Needs Upgrading message.
The Add Principal, Delete Principal, and Change Principal Roles menu options (located under the Principals menu) are disabled.
The Backup menu option is always enabled.
Database administrators can see an Upgrade menu option when they right-click on a database.
To upgrade a database

You must be a database administrator to upgrade a database
To upgrade, right-click on the database and click Upgrade. After the database is successfully upgraded, the database icon is updated to show the new status.
