Literal subscripts can be used for creating names like Vector1 and H2O. You use literal subscripts for naming purposes only. The literal subscript works in math regions only and not in text regions.
To enter a literal subscript as a named variable, use the Subscript button on the Math tab to toggle up and down to the subscript position.
Do not confuse literal subscripts with array subscripts that you insert with the index operator. Although they appear similar, they are quite different in function. Literal subscripts are part of a variable or function name. Array subscripts imply the creation of a vector or matrix of the size specified by the index operator. When you click an array subscript, you see a blue open rectangle. When you click a literal subscript you see the blue cursor.

Do not insert a literal subscript symbol from the Constants drop-down menu. Instead, use keyboard shortcuts to insert them. For example, to insert the ∞ symbol, type Ctrl+Shift+Z in the literal subscript placeholder.
