To Export an Object List for use as a BOM XML File
In Arbortext IsoDraw, you can export object and callout information in your illustration to a BOM-type Object List. Then you can edit the callout elements in the text file and save it as a BOM XML file.
*
For more information on exporting object information to an Object List, see “Object List” in the PTC Arbortext IsoDraw Data Exchange Reference.
Before exporting, prepare your illustration as follows to make it easier to convert the Object List text file to a BOM XML file.
Create the graphic objects you want to generate callouts for. Verify that they have object information assigned. If you want to illustrate graphic objects later, create simple placeholder objects and assign actual object information to them.
Draw at least one connected callout on each graphic object. (See “Drawing Connected Callouts” in the PTC Arbortext IsoDraw User's Reference.) Again, you can draw simple placeholder connected callouts for export, and then edit the actual callout information later.
*
Graphic objects without connected callouts are not exported when you export an Object List with Write as XML BOM selected.
After you prepare your illustration, follow these steps to export the object and callout information it contains to an BOM-type Object List text file.
1. In the File menu, click Export. The Export dialog box opens.
2. In the Export dialog box, perform the following actions:
a. Browse to the folder where you want to save the Object List text file.
b. In the File name box, type or select the name of the Object List text file. The Object List file name matches the illustration file name by default.
c. In the Save as type box, click Object list (*.txt).
d. Click Options. The Object list export options dialog box opens.
3. In the Object list export options dialog box, perform the following actions:
a. Click Write as XML BOM.
b. Under Attributes, select Name, Object tip, and Other attributes.
c. Under Element names, click Use object type as element name (default).
d. Click OK to close the dialog box.
4. In the Export dialog box, click Save.
The BOM-type Object List text file is created. Open this file in a text editor and save it with the extension .xml. Edit the XML file to create a valid BOM XML file. (Refer to the file description, schema, and example below.)
*
Before you try to generate callouts from the BOM XML file you created, perform the following actions:
Delete or disconnect all existing connected callouts in your illustration file. (See “Editing Objects with Connected Callouts” in the PTC Arbortext IsoDraw User's Reference.)
If the illustration file is linked to an earlier or different BOM XML file, break the link before you attempt to link this BOM XML file. (See Editing a Linked BOM XML File to Update Illustration Callouts.)
