To process text on a computer, unique numbers are assigned to each letter or character in a language. This assignment is referred to as encoding. European languages (single-byte languages) use about 150 characters. Therefore, the numeric range of a single byte (0–255) is sufficient to encode European languages. Asian languages (multibyte languages) use thousands of characters, requiring multiple bytes to store the numeric code of a single character.

PTC Creo applications provide universal support for single-byte languages. For multibyte languages there are some limitations.
