To Add a Weld Notch
You can add a notch at the same time that you create welds and edge preparation features. However, you can only create notches together with edge preparations if you simultaneously create a weld.
Before you begin, define the
general welding preferences.
1. Click > . The Welding tab opens.
2. Click
Weld Wizard. The
Weld Definition dialog box opens.
3. Under Feature, select the features to create.
◦ Select the
Notch check box to create an opening (cut) that enables welds to cross assembly components without interruption.
◦ Select the Weld check box. Under Weld feature, select the weld type:
Single Weld or One Side of Unsymmetrical Weld | Symmetrical Weld |
---|
![](../welding/images/wld_fillet_os.png) Fillet | ![](../welding/images/wld_fillet_bs.png) Double fillet |
![](../welding/images/wld_sqr_os.png) Square | ![](../welding/images/wld_sqr_bs.png) Double square |
![](../welding/images/wld_v_os.png) V | ![](../welding/images/wld_v_bs.png) Double V |
![](../welding/images/wld_bevel_os.png) Bevel | ![](../welding/images/wld_bevel_bs.png) Double bevel |
![](../welding/images/wld_y_os.png) V with broad root face (ISO only) | ![](../welding/images/wld_y_bs.png) Double V with broad root face (ISO only) |
![](../welding/images/wld_hy_os.png) Bevel with broad root face (ISO only) | ![](../welding/images/wld_hy_bs.png) Double bevel with broad root face (ISO only) |
![](../welding/images/wld_u_os.png) U | ![](../welding/images/wld_u_bs.png) Double U |
![](../welding/images/wld_j_os.png) J | ![](../welding/images/wld_j_bs.png) Double J |
![](../welding/images/wld_flar_v_os.png) Flare V | ![](../welding/images/wld_flare_v_bs.png) Double flare V |
![](../welding/images/wld_flar_bev_os.png) Flare bevel | ![](../welding/images/wld_flare_bevel_bs.png) Double flare bevel |
◦ Select the
Edge prep check box to cut the edge of the metal for an edge preparation. Under
Edge Preparation, select the edge preparation type:
Single Weld | Symmetrical Weld |
---|
![](../welding/images/wld_sqr_ro_os.png) One side root opening | ![](../welding/images/wld_sqr_ro_os.png) One side root opening |
![](../welding/images/wld_bevel_ac_os.png) Bevel angle cut | ![](../welding/images/wld_bevel_ac_bs.png) Double bevel angle cut |
![](../welding/images/wld_sqr_ro_bs.png) Both sides root opening | ![](../welding/images/wld_sqr_ro_bs.png) Both sides root opening |
![](../welding/images/wld_v_ac_os.png) V angle cut | ![](../welding/images/wld_v_ac_bs.png) Double V angle cut |
![](../welding/images/wld_bevel_ro_os.png) Bevel angle cut with root opening | ![](../welding/images/wld_bevel_ro_bs.png) Double bevel angle cut with root opening |
![](../welding/images/wld_v_ro_os.png) V angle cut with root opening | ![](../welding/images/wld_v_ro_bs.png) Double V angle cut with root opening |
In the value boxes, type a value for each dimension.
4. If you select Weld, under Combination, define how to create the geometry for any accompanying welds or edge preparations:
◦ Select Single to create a single feature.
◦ Select Symmetrical to create the same feature on both sides of a metal wall.
◦ Select
Unsymmetrical to create separate features on both sides of a metal wall. Select
Arrow side or
Other side to specify the side for the feature you are creating.
| You must select Weld along with Notch for Single, Symmetrical, and Unsymmetrical to be available. |
5. Under Notch Feature, select a notch type:
◦ To add a standard notch:
1. Click the notch type:
▪ ![](../welding/images/wld_notch_fillet_arc.png)
—Round corner
▪ ![](../welding/images/wld_notch_fillet_chamf.png)
—Triangular corner
▪ ![](../welding/images/wld_notch_fillet_rect.png)
—Rectangular corner
▪ ![](../welding/images/wld_notch_groove_arc.png)
—Rat hole
▪ ![](../welding/images/wld_notch_groove_rect.png)
—Rectangular
2. In the value boxes, type a value for each dimension.
3. Click OK. The WLD NOTCH TRAJ menu opens.
◦ To add a user-defined notch:
1. Under
Notch Feature, click
![](../welding/images/wld_notch_ud.png)
(user defined notch), and then click
OK. The
ASSEMBLY WELD NOTCH dialog box and a separate sketcher window open.
2. Sketch the custom notch shape. Be sure to include a coordinate system. The x- and y-planes define the section placement. The weld notch is cut in the direction of the z-axis.
3. Click
![](../welding/images/okay16x16.png)
on the Sketcher toolbar. The
WLD NOTCH TRAJ menu opens.
6. Use the WLD NOTCH TRAJ menu to define the weld notch trajectory by selecting a reference weld or notch path. When the trajectory is set, the Intersected Components dialog box opens.
| If a weld includes several sets, the first trajectory set is considered. |
7. Select the components that the weld notch will intersect using the options or buttons listed below:
◦ Automatic update—Automatically updates any changes to the weld notch intersections.
◦ ![](../welding/images/sel_pick.png)
—Manually selects components from the Model Tree or the graphics window.
◦ AutoAdd—Selects all the intersecting components with bounding boxes.
◦ Remove—Removes an intersecting component after you highlight it in the components table.
◦ ![](../welding/images/sel.png)
—Selects all the intersecting components in the components table.
◦ ![](../welding/images/unsel.png)
—Unselects all the intersecting components in the components table.
◦ Display level—Changes the visibility level of the intersecting components.
8. When the intersecting components are set, click OK.
9. In the ASSEMBLY WELD NOTCH dialog box, click OK.
