To Relate a Symbol Instance with Other Annotations
For Model-Based Definition (MBD), you can relate a symbol to any annotations, so that the symbol follows the annotation throughout the model, ensuring that the symbol and the related object stay together. An exception to this is the datum feature symbol annotations: you cannot relate symbols to datum feature symbol annotations.
To Relate a Symbol
To relate a symbol to an existing annotation, you must select a symbol that has automatic and free mode as the placement type attribute in the symbol definition.
1. Select a symbol from symbol gallery. Alternatively, select a symbol and click Repeat .
2. Select the annotation to relate the symbol to. The selected annotation is highlighted if it is eligible to be a parent annotation for the symbol.
3. Position the symbol in the graphics window, a temporary guideline is shown to adjust the offset placement of the symbol.
4. Middle-click to place the symbol as an offset annotation. The symbol is now related to the annotation and will maintain the offset distance from the annotation. You can adjust the offset distance by dragging the symbol to a new location.
5. Optionally, you can customize the related symbol using the Symbol Customization command.
Alternatively, you can also use the Change Placement command to relate the already placed symbol to any annotation.
When you relate a symbol to an annotation, if the parent annotation moves, the related symbol also moves. If you unassign or erase the parent annotation, the related symbol is also affected and vice versa
*
In MBD, the offset symbol always gets placed on the same annotation plane as the parent annotation.
You can relate multiple symbols to a single annotation. However, in MBD and drawing mode, you cannot relate another symbol to a symbol that is already related to an annotation.
When a parent annotation is rotated using the Change Orientation command, rotation of the related symbol is also supported.
Highlighting Preferences
When you select a parent annotation, the annotation and the related symbols are automatically highlighted in the graphics window. The related symbols are highlighted in the secondary color. When you select a related symbol, the parent annotation is automatically highlighted in the secondary color.
To Unrelate a Symbol
To disassociate a related symbol from the parent annotation, use the Unrelate command from the context menu.
