How do I organize my data?
Packets, folders, and projects are used to organize and manage data. Packets are the primary way to organize data for Creo Elements/Direct Model Manager. Folders and projects are provided for backwards compatibility with previous Creo Elements/Direct Manager Server products.
Projects must be enabled by the administrator for you to use them. If projects are enabled, you will have a My Projects tab in the Creo Elements/Direct Model Manager Workspace.
Packets
Packets are the primary form of data access control used by Creo Elements/Direct Model Manager. A packet can be sent and maintains all models and drawings within it. See also, Packet concepts, Packet policy and permissions, and Packet terminology.
Folders
Projects and folders are supported for backward compatibility with previous products, but are not the best organizational tools for Creo Elements/Direct Model Manager because you cannot assign roles or permissions directly to folders.
Folders provide a way for you to keep documents and other folders organized. A folder may contain documents or other folders.
Projects
Use projects to organize and assign roles for folders and documents. One or more people may be assigned as the project manager, and these people can change roles, and create sub-projects, folders, and documents. A folder or document inherits the project's roles, which control permission on that object. A project owns folders and documents, and you can change the owner project.
Controlling project
An item can have only one controlling project, which is displayed in the item's details panel.
Projects may contain packets. If a packet is controlled by a project, the packet will be governed by the project's roles.
Newly created or saved items inherit the controlling project of the working packet.
Project roles
Roles are used to control who can access and change projects, folders, and documents. All folders and documents in a project are controlled by the roles assigned to the project. Sub-projects inherit the roles assigned to the parent project, but may be changed. The following roles are available by default:
Project Manager has all permissions within the project.
OWNER is the user who owns the project and has all permissions for the project.
Releasers may change a document's state to released.
Part Releasers may change a part's state to released.
Lockers may change a document's state to locked.
Approvers may change a document's state to approved.
Folder Creator may create new folders.
Designers may create and change documents, and change a document's state.
PartDesigners may create and change parts.
Document Author may create and change documents.
Document Reader may view and save sub-projects, folders, documents and files.
Project views
Each project has a project view. Items can be visible in more than one project view, and items visible in a project view may or may not be controlled by that project. An item does not have to be visible in a project view to be controlled by the project's access permissions.
